Maruti Suzuki India
on Thursday marked a major milestone in India’s automobile manufacturing
journey by inaugurating its most advanced vehicle production facility at IMT
Kharkhoda in Haryana. The state-of-the-art plant was jointly dedicated to the
nation by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae
Takaichi through video conferencing during the India-Japan Joint Economic Forum
in New Delhi, underscoring the deepening strategic and economic partnership
between the two countries.
Developed over an
800-acre integrated manufacturing complex with an adjoining supplier park, the
Kharkhoda facility has commenced operations with an annual production capacity
of five lakh vehicles. In the next phase, the capacity will be doubled to one
million vehicles annually, positioning it among the world’s largest automobile
manufacturing facilities. Maruti Suzuki plans to invest a total of Rs 35,000
crore in the project, which is expected to create more than 21,000 employment
opportunities upon full completion.
Built on Suzuki’s
advanced ‘Smart Factory’ concept, the plant integrates Industry 5.0
technologies to enhance manufacturing efficiency, product quality and workplace
safety. It also reflects the company’s commitment to sustainable manufacturing
through the use of solar power, biogas, battery energy storage systems and
green energy procurement. The facility’s entire electricity requirement will
eventually be met through renewable energy sources.
The Kharkhoda plant
is expected to play a pivotal role in Maruti Suzuki’s strategy to achieve an
annual production capacity of four million vehicles, further strengthening
India’s position as a global automotive manufacturing hub.
Describing the
project as a landmark for the Suzuki Group, Toshihiro Suzuki said it was an
honour that the company’s most advanced manufacturing facility had been
inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi.
He said expanding the plant’s annual production capacity from five lakh to one
million vehicles would make it one of the largest automobile manufacturing
facilities in the world.
He said the project
reflected the success of the India-Japan partnership and the ‘Make in India’
initiative, adding that Suzuki was accelerating investments, employment
generation, exports and technology development in India under the favourable
policy environment created by the Modi government.
Highlighting India’s
growing strategic importance within the Suzuki Group, Toshihiro Suzuki said the
company’s first battery electric vehicle, the e VITARA, is being manufactured
exclusively at Maruti Suzuki’s Gujarat plant for export to 100 countries,
reinforcing India’s emergence as a key global production and export base for
next-generation mobility.
