An era in Indian
music came to a poignant close on Sunday with the passing of legendary playback
singer Asha Bhosle, whose extraordinary voice shaped the soundscape of Hindi
cinema for over seven decades. She was 92.
Admitted to Breach
Candy Hospital on Saturday following a bout of chest infection and fatigue, the
iconic singer succumbed to multi-organ failure, according to family sources.
Her granddaughter, Zanai Bhosle, confirmed the development.
A towering figure in
the golden age of Indian playback singing, Asha Bhosle carved out a distinct
identity despite sharing the musical legacy with her equally illustrious
sister, Lata Mangeshkar. While the two voices together dominated the industry
for decades, Asha’s versatility — effortlessly gliding from peppy cabaret
numbers to soul-stirring ghazals — set her apart as a genre-defying artist.
Her musical journey
began remarkably early, recording her first song at just 10 years old for the
Marathi film Majha Bal in 1943. What followed was an unparalleled career
spanning more than eight decades and over 12,000 songs across multiple
languages, making her one of the most prolific voices in global music history.
Even in her later years, her voice retained a remarkable freshness and
emotional depth.
Asha’s collaborations
with music directors like O. P. Nayyar and R. D. Burman redefined the contours
of Hindi film music. From the rhythmic exuberance of “Piya Tu Ab Toh Aaja” to
the haunting elegance of ghazals in Umrao Jaan, for which she won a National Award,
her repertoire reflected unmatched range and emotional nuance.
She lent her voice to
generations of leading actresses — from Meena Kumari and Madhubala to Zeenat
Aman, Kajol and Urmila Matondkar — becoming an enduring presence across
changing eras of cinema.
Born on September 8,
1935, in Sangli, Maharashtra, she was introduced to music by her father,
Dinanath Mangeshkar. Music ran deep in the family, with siblings including Usha
Mangeshkar, Meena Khadikar, and Hridaynath Mangeshkar contributing significantly
to the field.
Beyond music, Asha
Bhosle also found success as an entrepreneur, establishing a chain of
restaurants that carried her name in international cities. Her illustrious
career was recognised with numerous honours, including the prestigious Dadasaheb
Phalke Award, Padma Vibhushan, and multiple National Film Awards.
In 2023, she marked
her 90th birthday with a special live concert titled ASHA@90 in Dubai, reaffirming her enduring connection with
audiences worldwide.
Condolences poured in from across the country. Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi expressed deep grief, describing her voice as “an emotion that defined generations” and said her passing leaves an “immeasurable void.” Former Chief Minister and Leader of Opposition Naveen Patnaik also mourned the loss, calling her legacy “glorious and timeless.”
With her death, Indian music bids farewell to not just a singer, but a phenomenon — one whose voice will continue to echo across generations, transcending time, language, and genre.
