In a significant Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative aimed at ensuring healthcare reaches the most inaccessible communities, NTPC Bongaigaon on Monday flagged off three fully equipped boat ambulances to provide essential medical services to flood-prone char and riverine villages of Kokrajhar district along the Dhubri border.

The innovative initiative is designed to bridge the healthcare gap for thousands of people living in remote riverine areas who are frequently cut off from medical facilities during annual floods and adverse weather conditions.

The boat ambulances were inaugurated and flagged off by Derhasat Basumatary, Executive Member for Health & Family Welfare, Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) and MCLA of Salakati Constituency, in the presence of Moon Moon Brahma, Executive Member for Urban Development, BTC and MCLA of Parbatjhora Constituency, Nilu Brahma, Director of Health Services, BTC, senior officials of NTPC Bongaigaon, representatives of the District Health Department, healthcare professionals and members of the local community.

Implemented under NTPC Bongaigaon's CSR programme in collaboration with the BTC Government and the Directorate of Health Services, BTC, the project will provide uninterrupted healthcare services to vulnerable populations residing in Khutabagra and adjoining riverine areas. The three boat ambulances, developed at a cost of ₹20 lakh, are equipped with essential medicines, emergency medical equipment and staffed by trained healthcare personnel, including medical professionals and Auxiliary Nurse Midwives (ANMs). They will deliver primary healthcare services and emergency medical assistance directly to the doorsteps of people living in remote villages.

Speaking on the occasion, Derhasat Basumatary lauded NTPC Bongaigaon for conceptualising an innovative solution to one of the most pressing challenges faced by residents of flood-prone riverine regions. He said the boat ambulances would substantially improve access to timely medical care, particularly for pregnant women, children, senior citizens and emergency patients during periods when conventional transportation becomes impossible.

Addressing the gathering, Moon Moon Brahma underscored the importance of strong partnerships between public institutions and corporate organisations in improving the quality of life in rural and riverine communities. She commended NTPC Bongaigaon for its sustained commitment to community welfare and inclusive development across the Bodoland Territorial Region.

Highlighting the significance of the initiative, Nilu Brahma, Director of Health Services, BTC, said the boat ambulances would function as mobile healthcare units carrying medicines, medical equipment and trained health workers to remote villages. Besides providing emergency care, they will strengthen public health outreach by supporting immunisation drives, maternal and child healthcare, and treatment of common ailments in difficult-to-reach areas.

NTPC Bongaigaon officials reaffirmed that healthcare remains one of the company's key CSR priorities. They said the initiative reflects NTPC's commitment to ensuring that no community is deprived of essential healthcare because of geographical barriers. The boat ambulances, they added, will serve as a vital lifeline during floods while also supporting routine healthcare delivery throughout the year.
