Shyam Metalics Group
has strengthened its backward integration strategy with an investment in Alom
Solar Private Ltd, which has been declared the successful bidder for the
Phutamura coal block in Chhattisgarh, with estimated reserves of 170 million
tonnes.
Located in the
Mand-Raigarh coalfield in Raigarh district, the coal block spans approximately
7.324 square kilometres. Mining operations and coal production are expected to
commence from July 2027, the company said in a statement.
The development is
expected to bolster the group's long-term raw material security by ensuring a
stable and cost-effective coal supply for its captive power generation
facilities and steel manufacturing operations.
Securing the coal
block marks a strategic step towards reducing dependence on external fuel
supplies, enhancing operational self-sufficiency and strengthening the group's
integrated manufacturing model amid its expansion plans.
"Our group's
investment in Alom Solar Private Limited and the securing of the Phutamura coal
block marks a pivotal milestone in our strategic journey towards absolute
self-reliance," Shyam Metalics and Energy Ltd Chairman and Managing
Director Brij Bhushan Agarwal said.
As the group scales
up its manufacturing capabilities, securing high-quality, long-term raw
material linkages remains paramount, Agarwal said, adding that the coal block
would significantly strengthen its backward integration framework and support
uninterrupted fuel supplies for its captive power plants and core steel
operations.
The development also
underscores the company's focus on operational resilience, sustainable growth
and long-term value creation for stakeholders, he added.
