Siemens Limited has delivered an integrated suite of advanced rail technologies for Pune Metro Line 3, which has commenced commercial passenger operations following its inauguration by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, marking a significant milestone in India's urban transportation infrastructure.

The 23-km elevated metro corridor, connecting Hinjewadi, one of Pune's largest IT and business hubs, with Shivajinagar, is expected to significantly improve urban connectivity, ease traffic congestion and provide commuters with a faster, safer and more sustainable mode of transportation. Once fully operational, the corridor is expected to reduce travel time by around 50 per cent.

Siemens Limited, as part of a consortium comprising Siemens AG and its partners, has delivered a comprehensive range of turnkey solutions, including systems integration, 750V DC third-rail electrification, Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC), integrated communications systems, project management and depot equipment.

The integrated technologies are designed to facilitate intelligent, safe and reliable metro operations across the corridor. The project scope also includes 10 years of maintenance support for the electrification and signalling systems to ensure their long-term reliability and operational performance.

"The commencement of Pune Metro Line 3 commercial operations is a landmark achievement in India's urban mobility journey. The successful collaboration between Tata Group company and Siemens highlights the potential of public-private partnerships to drive future metro expansion across the country," Rajeev Joisar, Head of Mobility Business, Siemens Limited, said.

Overcoming the complexities of the project, the teams worked relentlessly to deliver advanced electrification, signalling and communications technologies to ensure safe, intelligent and reliable metro operations, he added.

The corridor is expected to improve connectivity between Hinjewadi and Shivajinagar, reduce commuting time by nearly half and contribute to Pune's sustainable urban development.

Pune Metro Line 3 has been developed under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model in accordance with the Government of India's New Metro Rail Policy by Pune IT City Metro Rail Limited, a special purpose company.

The company was established as a joint venture between TRIL Urban Transport Private Limited, a Tata Group company, and Siemens Project Ventures GmbH, a subsidiary of Siemens Financial Services, under the PPP framework.
