Global agricultural
innovation leader Syngenta has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to
become a strategic partner in Annam.AI, India’s first open-data agricultural
ecosystem aimed at transforming farming through artificial intelligence,
real-time data and precision agriculture technologies.
The agreement was
formalized at an event in Nice, France, attended by Narendra Modi and Emmanuel
Macron, marking a significant step in strengthening India’s digital agriculture
infrastructure and enhancing resilience for millions of farmers.
India’s agriculture
sector, one of the largest in the world, supports an estimated 150 million
farming households and plays a crucial role in global food security. Despite
its vast arable land, diverse agro-climatic zones and strong crop production
base, the sector continues to grapple with challenges such as erratic monsoons,
droughts, unseasonal rainfall, pest attacks and climate-related disruptions.
These issues disproportionately affect smallholder farmers, who account for
more than 80 per cent of farming households and typically cultivate less than
two hectares of land.
Annam.AI — short for
Alliance for Next-gen Nourishment through Agriculture Modernization and
inspired by the Sanskrit word for “food” — seeks to address these challenges by
building a nationwide agricultural intelligence backbone powered by open data.
The initiative will provide farmers with free, hyperlocal and AI-driven
advisories that integrate crop intelligence, real-time microclimate insights
and multilingual engagement tools, enabling informed decision-making and
improved productivity.
Backed by the
Government of India through the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of
Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, the initiative is being driven by Indian
Institute of Technology Ropar in collaboration with global technology partners,
including Google.
Under the
partnership, Syngenta will contribute its extensive research, development and
agronomic expertise to develop advanced crop health monitoring systems, pest
forecasting capabilities and heat-stress prediction models. These tools are
expected to enhance precision farming practices and strengthen climate
resilience across India’s agricultural landscape.
Jeff Rowe, Chief Executive Officer of Syngenta Group, said, “At Syngenta we're creating breakthroughs for farmers in every field, to deliver higher yields with lower impact. Annam.AI presents a unique opportunity to contribute to a transformative, digital foundation for Indian agriculture that will benefit more than 600 million people in this country. We are deeply honored to work with many talented and committed people in India’s government and universities, as well as with other innovation leaders in fulfilling this vision."
