Tourism serves as a vital bridge connecting cultures, generating economic
opportunities, and advancing soft diplomacy, Vice-President C. P. Radhakrishnan
said on Tuesday while addressing the Tourism Leadership Summit organised by the
US-India Partnership Forum in collaboration with the Sankala Foundation in the
national capital.
Appreciating the organisers for creating a platform that celebrates the
transformative potential of tourism while outlining a strategic roadmap for
strengthening the India–US economic corridor in travel and hospitality, the
Vice-President observed that tourism goes far beyond being a conventional
industry. He described it as a powerful medium for cultural exchange, a
catalyst for job creation, and an instrument that deepens global partnerships.
Highlighting the depth of tourism ties between India and the United States,
he said the growing flow of visitors reflects strong people-to-people
connections, shared democratic values, entrepreneurial dynamism, and the
vibrancy of the Indian diaspora. He noted that such exchanges play a crucial
role in strengthening bilateral relations and fostering mutual understanding.
Referring to India’s forward-looking policy framework, Radhakrishnan said
that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the country has
unveiled Tourism Vision 2029, which aims to develop at least one world-class
tourist destination in every State. He emphasised that the initiative is not
limited to beautification but focuses on building holistic tourism ecosystems
supported by seamless connectivity, smart infrastructure, safety, sustainability,
digital integration, and enriched visitor experiences aligned with global
standards.
Pointing to India’s civilisational legacy, diverse geography, and
youthful demographic dividend, he said the nation is well positioned to
redefine global tourism. He called for special emphasis on the preservation and
world-class development of India’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites through improved
visitor amenities, interpretation centres, last-mile connectivity, sustainable
practices, and immersive digital storytelling.
Stressing the need for environmentally responsible growth, the
Vice-President advocated climate-conscious infrastructure, community-led
tourism models, and the protection of natural and cultural heritage. He also
highlighted the importance of developing new-age destinations that showcase
India’s achievements in space technology, digital public infrastructure,
renewable energy, and advanced manufacturing, while leveraging emerging
technologies such as artificial intelligence to enhance visitor experiences.
Describing tourism as one of the largest generators of employment, he underscored the need for greater investment in skill development, entrepreneurship, and women-led enterprises to ensure inclusive and community-driven growth.
Expressing confidence that the Summit would open a new chapter in India–US cooperation, Radhakrishnan said the partnership in tourism and hospitality would be defined by sustainability, innovation, inclusivity, and shared prosperity.
