JHARSUGUDA, JULY 4, 2026

Vedanta Aluminium, India's largest aluminium producer, conducted a comprehensive onsite emergency mock drill at the hydrogen plant within its power plant operations in Jharsuguda as part of its robust safety management framework. Simulating a hydrogen gas leak during routine maintenance operations, the exercise evaluated the plant's emergency response protocols, interdepartmental coordination and overall operational preparedness under controlled conditions.

The drill featured a simulated hydrogen leak accompanied by a technician injury, enabling emergency response teams to test their readiness in handling a critical situation. Equipped with appropriate personal protective equipment and firefighting resources, emergency personnel responded swiftly to contain the simulated incident, secure the affected area and successfully conclude the operation before declaring an "All Clear."

The exercise was witnessed by senior leadership from Vedanta Aluminium as well as government officials, including Swaroop Jena, Deputy Director of Factories and Boilers, Sambalpur Division; Archana Das, Assistant Director of Factories and Boilers, Jharsuguda Zone; Sushant Mishra, District Project Officer, OSDMA; and C. Lakra, Fire Officer, Jharsuguda.

Sharing his views on the initiative, C Chandru, CEO, Vedanta Aluminium – Jharsuguda, said, “Safety is the foundation on which our operational excellence is built. Regular emergency preparedness exercises enable us to assess our safety systems, strengthen response capabilities, and cultivate a culture where every employee is equipped to respond confidently during critical situations. Such initiatives reflect our commitment to protecting our people, our assets, and the communities around us while maintaining the highest standards of operational integrity.”

Swaroop Jena said, “Mock drills provide an important opportunity to assess industry preparedness and response mechanisms under simulated emergency conditions. The exercise organized at Vedanta Aluminium’s operations demonstrated strong coordination among teams and adherence to established safety procedures. Through these initiatives, organizations are strengthening their overall safety culture."

Emergency mock drills are an integral part of Vedanta Aluminium's safety management framework and are conducted periodically across its operations to ensure preparedness for a wide range of emergency scenarios. At its Jharsuguda operations, the world's second-largest aluminium plant, these exercises are complemented by continuous safety training, behaviour-based safety programmes and regular collaborations with the National Disaster Response Force, Odisha State Disaster Management Authority and the Directorate of Factories & Boilers, Odisha. Together, these initiatives strengthen emergency response capabilities, reinforce statutory compliance and support the company's commitment to achieving a Zero Harm workplace.
