Reinforcing its commitment to preventive healthcare and community well-being, Vedanta Aluminium, India’s largest producer of aluminium, observed World No Tobacco Day through a comprehensive awareness campaign in Jharsuguda in collaboration with the District Health Department. The initiative, aligned with the World Health Organization’s global theme for 2026, “Unmasking the Appeal – Countering Nicotine and Tobacco Addiction,” reached more than 300 individuals across the villages of Brundamal, Budula, Gumkarma and Bishadehi.

World No Tobacco Day seeks to raise awareness about the health, social, environmental and economic consequences of tobacco use while encouraging individuals and communities to embrace healthier lifestyles. In line with this year’s theme, Vedanta Aluminium’s awareness drive focused on exposing the realities of tobacco and nicotine addiction, particularly among vulnerable groups such as adolescents. The programme aimed to equip community members with the knowledge and support needed to make informed decisions about their health and well-being.

The awareness sessions were led by medical experts from Vedanta Aluminium’s Mobile Health Unit (MHU), who engaged participants on the long-term health risks associated with tobacco consumption, practical strategies for quitting tobacco, the importance of early diagnosis, and the benefits of adopting healthier lifestyles. Interactive discussions and counselling sessions further helped participants understand the link between tobacco use and serious health conditions, including oral cancer, cardiovascular diseases, respiratory illnesses and other non-communicable diseases.

Speaking on the occasion, C Chandru, CEO – Vedanta Aluminium, Jharsuguda, said, “Through focused health awareness initiatives such as these, we aim to encourage informed choices, preventive healthcare practices and long-term well-being. Our partnership with local authorities helps extend critical health education to the grassroots, building healthier, tobacco-free communities.”

Sharing his experience, Ramesh Pradhan, a resident of Brundamal village, said, “The awareness sessions helped us understand the serious health impacts of tobacco use and the importance of quitting before it affects our families. The guidance provided was practical and motivating, and many of us are now committed to making healthier choices.”

Vedanta Aluminium continues to prioritize healthcare as a key pillar of its community development efforts across Odisha. Through its Mobile Health Units and allied interventions, the company delivers doorstep healthcare services to more than 18,000 individuals and reaches over 2.8 lakh people annually through preventive health awareness programmes across Jharsuguda and neighbouring regions. By equipping communities with accurate information and promoting early intervention, initiatives such as these play a crucial role in reducing preventable health risks and improving overall quality of life.
