Odisha’s iconic
Sambalpuri handloom heritage took centre stage at Bhubaneswar Times Fashion
Week 2026, as women weavers associated with Vedanta Aluminium’s VedSuta
initiative showcased their traditional craftsmanship through contemporary
designer ensembles, bringing the rich cultural legacy of the state to the
mainstream fashion arena.
In a celebration of
indigenous artistry and women’s empowerment, traditional Sambalpuri sarees
woven by VedSuta artisans were transformed into contemporary designer outfits
in collaboration with a fashion house. The showcase also saw the women artisans
walk the runway wearing creations crafted from their own textiles, placing the
weavers and their skills at the heart of the fashion event.
The collection seamlessly blended Sambalpuri textiles’ distinctive motifs, vibrant colours and intricate weaving techniques with modern silhouettes, demonstrating how traditional handloom can evolve with changing fashion sensibilities while retaining its cultural identity.
Beyond the glamour of
the runway, the initiative offered rural women artisans an opportunity to showcase
their work before a wider audience of fashion enthusiasts, industry
professionals and potential consumers, opening avenues for greater market
visibility and sustainable livelihoods.
“Odisha’s traditional crafts represent
generations of skill, creativity and cultural knowledge. Through initiatives
like VedSuta, we are creating opportunities for women artisans to build
sustainable livelihoods while carrying this heritage forward. Their
participation at Bhubaneswar Times Fashion Week reflects the possibilities that
emerge when grassroots enterprises gain access to larger platforms. We remain
committed to supporting women-led businesses and enabling local craftsmanship
to reach wider markets,” C Chandru, CEO of Vedanta Aluminium, said.
For the artisans, the
runway appearance was a moment of pride and recognition, highlighting the
potential of traditional weaving skills to find new expression in contemporary
fashion.
“We have grown up seeing Sambalpuri sarees
being woven in our homes and villages. To see our work transformed into
beautiful designer outfits and presented at a fashion show was a very proud
moment for us. It gives us confidence that the skills we have learnt and
practised for years can take us to places we never imagined,” said Rinky Meher,
a VedSuta artisan from Ragunathpalli.
VedSuta is part of
the broader livelihood development ecosystem of the Subhalaxmi Cooperative,
established in 2008. The cooperative currently supports more than 5,500 women
across 510 self-help groups in 106 villages of Jharsuguda district, promoting
financial inclusion, entrepreneurship, skill development and market access.
Through initiatives
spanning handloom textiles, terracotta crafts, jute products and other rural
enterprises, the cooperative seeks to strengthen women's economic participation
and create opportunities for grassroots businesses to grow.
The fashion showcase
reflects Vedanta Aluminium’s broader commitment to preserving indigenous
craftsmanship, strengthening rural entrepreneurship and generating sustainable
livelihood opportunities. By connecting traditional artisans with contemporary
markets and mainstream platforms, the company seeks to enhance the visibility
and commercial potential of locally produced crafts.
During the 2025-26 financial year, Vedanta Aluminium’s community development initiatives in Jharsuguda positively impacted more than seven lakh people across 61 villages, covering key areas such as education, healthcare, livelihoods, women’s empowerment and community infrastructure.
The participation of VedSuta weavers at the fashion week underscores the growing possibilities of integrating traditional skills with modern market opportunities, while reinforcing the role of women-led enterprises and local craftsmanship in advancing the vision of an Atmanirbhar Bharat.
