Vedanta Aluminium, India’s largest aluminium producer, is fostering inclusive growth beyond its industrial operations through Project VedGram, its flagship agriculture and rural development initiative in Jharsuguda. By integrating modern farming practices, water conservation measures, livestock support, and livelihood diversification, the programme is helping rural communities build resilience and unlock sustainable pathways to prosperity.

Over the past year, Project VedGram has positively impacted more than 1,000 farmers and rural households through a range of interventions, including wadi development, paddy cultivation, livestock enhancement, poultry micro-enterprises, and pisciculture. These efforts have contributed significantly to improving farmers’ incomes and strengthening rural livelihoods.

Reaffirming its commitment to sustainable agriculture, Vedanta Aluminium recently observed World Agriculture Day by organising a Soil Awareness Programme and Soil Health Camp for local farmers. The initiative focused on soil conservation, scientific farming practices, and raising awareness about the critical role of soil health in enhancing agricultural productivity and long-term sustainability.

Commenting on the initiative, C. Chandru, CEO, Vedanta Aluminium, Jharsuguda, said, “Sustainable development begins with empowering communities to become self-reliant. Through Project VedGram, we are working closely with rural households to strengthen livelihoods, enhance agricultural productivity, and create opportunities for long-term prosperity. Our commitment goes beyond economic growth to building resilient communities that can thrive for generations.”

Sharing his experience, Rajesh Marei, a farmer from Siriapali village, said, “Before receiving irrigation support, I depended entirely on rainfall and could grow only one crop a year. With the support of Vedanta and Project VedGram, I can now cultivate multiple crops across seasons, increasing my income and reducing farming risks. This assistance has made a meaningful difference to my family’s livelihood and future.”

Since its inception, Project VedGram has facilitated the establishment of 50 wadis across nearly 25 acres, transforming previously unproductive land into income-generating orchards. To strengthen water security, the initiative has supported the construction of 35 community ponds and 10 farm ponds, improving irrigation access and promoting water conservation. Solar-powered drinking water systems have also been installed in Siriapali and Katikela villages, enhancing access to safe drinking water.

In the livestock sector, more than 100 farmers have benefited from the distribution of over 800 kg of mineral mixture and 5,300 kg of Harit Dhara feed supplements, providing essential nutrients to improve animal health and productivity. More than 250 artificial insemination procedures have also been conducted to enhance cattle breed quality. Additionally, 25 poultry units have been established to support livelihood diversification.

The project has further strengthened agricultural capabilities through farmer training programmes and field schools that promote improved and sustainable farming practices. More than 200 solar-powered insect traps have been distributed to encourage eco-friendly pest management. Farmers have also received horticulture support through the distribution of tomato and brinjal saplings, along with technical guidance. Furthermore, 150 farmers have been supported under a cash crop initiative promoting potato cultivation.

As Project VedGram continues to expand its footprint, it is creating stronger and more resilient farming ecosystems by enhancing incomes, improving access to resources, and encouraging sustainable agricultural practices. Through such initiatives, Vedanta Aluminium remains committed to driving inclusive rural development and creating lasting value for communities in its operational areas.
