In a significant
boost to public healthcare in Odisha and Eastern India, the All India Institute
of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Bhubaneswar has achieved a historic milestone by
successfully completing 100 advanced robotic-assisted surgeries.
This landmark accomplishment
makes AIIMS Bhubaneswar the first government-funded healthcare institution in
Odisha to establish a fully functional, multi-disciplinary robotic surgery
programme, offering state-of-the-art surgical care to underprivileged and
middle-income patients at a fraction of the cost charged by private hospitals.
Since its launch, the
robotic surgery programme has successfully managed several complex cases across
five major specialties, including General Surgery, Surgical Gastroenterology,
Urology, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, as well as specialised procedures such
as robotic bariatric surgery and complex paediatric surgeries.
Describing the
achievement as a major milestone in the institute's journey towards clinical
excellence, Dr. Ashutosh Biswas, Executive Director & CEO, AIIMS
Bhubaneswar, said, "The completion of 100 robotic surgeries reflects our

Before the introduction of the robotic surgery programme, patients in Odisha requiring advanced minimally invasive robotic procedures had limited access to such facilities in the public sector. Many had to travel to metropolitan cities such as Chennai, Hyderabad, or New Delhi, often incurring substantial financial and logistical burdens. While similar procedures in private and corporate hospitals typically cost several lakhs of rupees, AIIMS Bhubaneswar now offers these advanced surgical services at highly subsidised government rates, significantly reducing out-of-pocket expenditure for patients.
A special ceremony was organised to commemorate the achievement. The event was attended by Dean (Academic) Dr. Dillip Kumar Parida, Medical Superintendent Dr. Prabhas Ranjan Tripathy, OT Committee Chairman and Head of Paediatric Surgery Dr. Manoj Kumar Mohanty, Nodal Officer of the Robotic Surgery Programme and Head of Urology Dr. Prasant Nayak, Deputy Director (Administration) Lt. Col. Abhijit Sarkar, along with faculty members, nursing officers, and staff of the institute.
