AIIMS Bhubaneswar is
poised to script another landmark chapter in its journey of academic excellence
as it hosts its 6th Convocation Ceremony on Saturday, July 18, 2026. The
prestigious event will witness the conferment of degrees on 684 students and
the presentation of 61 Gold Medals to 32 meritorious achievers. Adding to the
significance of the occasion, the institute has also announced the
establishment of a dedicated Neonatal Surgical Intensive Care Unit (Neonatal
Surgical ICU), reaffirming its commitment to strengthening advanced healthcare
services for newborns.
Addressing a press briefing
on Friday, AIIMS Bhubaneswar Executive Director Dr. Ashutosh Biswas informed
that Smt. Anupriya Patel, Hon'ble Union Minister of State for Health &
Family Welfare and Chemicals & Fertilizers, Government of India, will grace
the convocation as the Chief Guest. She will confer degrees upon the graduating
students and bless them as they embark on their professional careers.
The ceremony will
also be attended by several eminent dignitaries, including Shri Mukesh
Mahaling, Hon'ble Minister of Health & Family Welfare, Parliamentary
Affairs, Electronics & Information Technology, Government of Odisha, and
Smt. Aparajita Sarangi, Hon'ble Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha), Bhubaneswar,
adding further prestige to the event.
This year's
graduating batch comprises 192 MBBS students, 163 MD/MS students, 60 DM/MCh
students, 17 Post-Doctoral Fellows (PDF), four PhD scholars, 134 BSc (Hons.)
Nursing students, 75 BSc (Hons.) Paramedical students, and 39 MSc Nursing
students. In recognition of exceptional academic excellence, 61 Gold Medals
will be conferred on 32 outstanding students during the ceremony.
In another major
development, AIIMS Bhubaneswar has approved the establishment of a dedicated
Neonatal Surgical Intensive Care Unit under its Department of Pediatric Surgery.
The state-of-the-art facility is expected to transform the care of critically
ill newborns requiring complex surgical interventions. The specialized unit
will provide comprehensive preoperative stabilization, postoperative intensive
care, and multidisciplinary management for newborns with congenital and
acquired surgical conditions, particularly those referred from outside the
institute.
The initiative is
expected to significantly improve access to advanced neonatal surgical care,
reduce avoidable referrals, and enhance survival and clinical outcomes for
critically ill infants. Besides strengthening patient care, the Neonatal
Surgical ICU will also boost postgraduate teaching, hands-on training for
resident doctors, and clinical research in neonatal surgery and critical care,
further reinforcing AIIMS Bhubaneswar's position as a premier tertiary referral
centre for Eastern India.
