Ashok Leyland, the Indian flagship of the Hinduja Group and a leader in the country’s commercial vehicle industry, on Monday marked a significant milestone in its clean mobility journey with the inauguration of a greenfield, integrated commercial vehicle manufacturing facility in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. The new plant, focused primarily on electric vehicles, reinforces the company’s long-term commitment to sustainable transportation and green manufacturing.

The facility was inaugurated by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath in the presence of Rajnath Singh, Union Minister of Defence, and H.D. Kumaraswamy, Union Minister of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises. The ceremony also saw the participation of Deputy Chief Ministers and senior ministers from the Uttar Pradesh government, diplomats from various countries, prominent industrialists from India and abroad, Ashok Leyland’s global dealers and suppliers, and senior leadership from the Hinduja Group and the company.

Located at the Sarojini Nagar Industrial Area near Lucknow Airport, the plant spans over 70 acres and stands as Ashok Leyland’s most advanced and sustainable manufacturing facility globally. Designed to deliver world-class quality and operational excellence, the plant has an annual production capacity of up to 5,000 vehicles, with a strong focus on electric mobility solutions, particularly electric buses.

Highlighting the strategic importance of the new facility, Dheeraj Hinduja, Chairman of Ashok Leyland, said the inauguration marks the beginning of a new chapter for the company in Uttar Pradesh. He emphasised the Hinduja Group’s commitment to driving economic growth, creating meaningful employment, and fostering long-term regional prosperity. He added that the plant not only strengthens Ashok Leyland’s role in shaping the future of India’s commercial vehicle industry but also advances its journey towards achieving Net Zero emissions, underlining the company’s readiness for a more sustainable future.

Shenu Agarwal, Managing Director and CEO of Ashok Leyland, said Uttar Pradesh’s proactive stance on environmental responsibility and sustainable development made it a natural partner in the company’s green mobility ambitions. He noted that the establishment of the plant aligns closely with Ashok Leyland’s target of achieving Net Zero by 2048. Equipped with modern technology and high levels of automation, the facility reflects the company’s focus on innovation and world-class manufacturing standards. With a strong emphasis on electric buses, he said, the plant represents a decisive step towards building a cleaner and future-ready mobility ecosystem for India.

Beyond manufacturing, the Lucknow facility is expected to play a vital role in skill development and employment generation in the region. A majority of the workforce has been drawn from Uttar Pradesh, with a significant representation of women employees, reinforcing the company’s inclusive growth approach.

Designed as a green facility, the plant incorporates several sustainable features, including rooftop solar panels, energy-efficient LED lighting, battery-operated in-plant logistics, positive water balance initiatives, and a zero-discharge system. These measures collectively underline Ashok Leyland’s commitment to environmentally responsible manufacturing practices.

With Uttar Pradesh rapidly emerging as a frontrunner in electric vehicle adoption, the new Lucknow facility strengthens Ashok Leyland’s long-term partnership with the state’s green mobility vision. The plant not only consolidates the company’s leadership in sustainable transportation but also positions it as a key enabler in building a cleaner, more efficient, and future-ready mobility ecosystem for both the state and the nation.
