Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Thursday set a clear
target of ensuring quality and uninterrupted electricity supply across every
part of Odisha by 2030, underlining the state government’s focus on building a
stronger and future-ready power infrastructure.
Reviewing the Energy Department’s ongoing programmes and
upcoming projects at Lok Seva Bhavan in Bhubaneswar, the Chief Minister
emphasised that reliable power supply must reach every region of the state
while keeping pace with Odisha’s rapid industrialisation.
The review meeting highlighted a major expansion of the state’s
transmission infrastructure, with the government working towards strengthening
the grid network and improving the reliability and quality of electricity
supplied to consumers.
A key component of the state’s strategy is the establishment
of a 765 kV grid ring system, aimed at ensuring uninterrupted and quality power
supply while meeting the growing electricity demand generated by industrial
expansion.
Two 765/400 kV grid stations at Angul and Sundargarh are already
operational, while similar stations are under construction at Gopalpur and
Paradip.
The government is also planning to establish three additional
765/400 kV substations at Kolabira, Duburi and Betakholi near Athagarh. These
projects are expected to further strengthen Odisha’s high-voltage transmission
network and enhance the reliability of power supply across the state.
According to the review, Odisha currently has 210 operational
grid substations. As many as 15 new grid substations have been added during the
past two years.
In addition, 788.99 circuit kilometres of transmission lines
have been laid during the same period, reflecting the government’s efforts to
expand the state’s transmission capacity.
The state is also undertaking the modernisation of existing
grid infrastructure to improve efficiency and ensure that the growing demand
for electricity can be met effectively.
Odisha currently has five 400 kV grid substations, while four
additional 400 kV substations are under construction and two more are at the
tender stage.
The state has further planned nine additional 400 kV grid
substations as part of its long-term transmission expansion programme.
The government expects the completion and commissioning of
these projects to significantly strengthen the state’s power network and help
address electricity-related challenges as demand continues to rise.
The state’s power-sector expansion is closely linked to its
industrial growth plans. Around 590 industrial projects are expected to be
established in Odisha by 2030-31.
To ensure adequate and quality electricity supply to these
upcoming industrial projects as well as other consumers, the state plans to
undertake power projects worth around Rs 16,000 crore.
The large-scale investment is expected to support the
expansion and modernisation of transmission infrastructure and create the
capacity required to meet Odisha’s future power demand.
The Chief Minister’s 2030 target comes against the backdrop of the state’s broader push to create a reliable electricity ecosystem capable of supporting households, businesses and large-scale industries.
Deputy Chief Minister and Energy Minister Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo, Development Commissioner D.K. Singh, Additional Chief Secretary to the Chief Minister Shashwat Mishra, Energy Department Additional Chief Secretary Vishal Dev, OPTCL CMD Bhaskar Jyoti Sharma and other senior officials attended the review meeting.
