Vantara, the global wildlife conservation
organisation founded by Reliance Industries Executive Director Anant Ambani,
has announced the launch of Vantara University in Jamnagar, Gujarat — the
world’s first integrated global university dedicated exclusively to wildlife
conservation and veterinary sciences.
Envisioned as a
modern-day Gurukul and purpose-driven institution, Vantara University seeks to
position India as a global hub for advanced education and research in wildlife
conservation, veterinary medicine, and animal welfare. Rooted in compassion,
scientific excellence, and sustainability, the university aims to nurture
future leaders equipped to address complex challenges in wildlife health and
ecosystem preservation. Its curriculum will draw upon India’s rich knowledge
traditions while embracing a forward-looking, globally relevant academic
approach.
“The future of conservation will depend on how
we prepare minds and institutions to serve life with compassion, knowledge, and
skill. Vantara University is shaped by a deeply personal journey of witnessing
animals in distress and recognising the need for greater capability in their
care. Inspired by the ethos of the ancient Nalanda University, and the spirit
of Ā no bhadrāḥ kratavo yantu viśvataḥ,
which means let noble thoughts come to us from all directions, the university
seeks to nurture a new generation committed to protecting every life,” Anant
Ambani said.
Reflecting this
philosophical foundation, two Bijoliya sandstones were incorporated into the
ceremonial design of the foundation venue. Sourced from the ancient Vindhyan
geological formation — the same formation associated with the historic Nalanda
University in present-day Bihar — the stones symbolise India’s enduring legacy
of knowledge and intellectual pursuit.
The foundation
ceremony, conducted in accordance with Hindu traditions, brought together
distinguished representatives from academia, science, conservation, and public
life, including mentors and teachers of Anant Ambani. A key symbolic ritual
involved the placement of soil, water, and stones collected from
biodiversity-rich landscapes across India, including grasslands, forests,
wetlands, arid ecosystems, and Himalayan and other high-altitude regions
spanning the northern, southern, eastern, western, and central parts of the
country. The gesture underscored the vision of building the institution upon
the nation’s ecological heritage.
Vantara University
aims to bring together diverse disciplines within a unified academic ecosystem
anchored in real-world conservation practice. Drawing on Vantara’s extensive
field experience, the institution will translate practical knowledge into
academic programmes, professional training modules, and globally relevant
research frameworks. By integrating compassion with scientific rigour, the
university seeks to develop professionals capable of addressing evolving
challenges in wildlife care, ecosystem health, and conservation policy.
The university will
offer undergraduate, postgraduate, fellowship, and specialised programmes
across a wide range of disciplines, including wildlife medicine and surgery,
nutrition, behavioural sciences, genetics, epidemiology, One Health,
conservation policy, and naturalistic animal care environment design.
Structured into specialised colleges aligned with Vantara’s operational
expertise, the institution will also provide scholarships to support students
from socially and economically marginalised backgrounds.
Supported by advanced
academic and clinical infrastructure, international collaborations, and a fully
residential campus, Vantara University will prioritise action-oriented research
aimed at strengthening animal welfare and conservation practices. Its
educational model integrates both in situ
and ex situ conservation approaches,
linking natural habitats with scientific care systems to ensure long-term
wildlife welfare and sustainable ecosystem management.
Recognising that the
future of conservation will be shaped not only in forests but also in
classrooms, laboratories, and human conscience, the university seeks to advance
knowledge in wildlife health, animal care environment design, and conservation
sciences. It aims to serve as a long-term platform for education, innovation,
and interdisciplinary research.
The foundation ceremony also marked the launch of the ‘Vantara University Founding Fellows’ initiative and the ‘Every Life Matters’ scholarship programme, reinforcing a broader national commitment to compassionate conservation education. The initiative carries a strong message that knowledge must serve not only progress, but also protection.
In its stated vision, Vantara University aspires to be more than an academic institution. It reflects the belief that the natural world requires not only admiration, but also informed systems, scientific capability, and skilled hands dedicated to safeguarding every form of life.
