In a significant boost to Odisha’s power infrastructure and
the modernization of its electricity transmission network, Odisha Power
Transmission Corporation Limited (OPTCL) on Thursday launched the
state-of-the-art Megger R30 Van-Mounted Cable Fault Location and Testing
System, a cutting-edge technology designed to drastically reduce fault
detection time and improve the reliability of power transmission across the
state.
The advanced system was inaugurated by Deputy Chief Minister
and Minister of Agriculture & Farmers' Empowerment and Energy, Kanak
Vardhan Singh Deo, at the Kharavel Bhavan premises in Bhubaneswar. The launch
ceremony was attended by Additional Chief Secretary of the Energy Department, Vishal
Kumar Dev, and OPTCL Chairman-cum-Managing Director, Bhaskar Jyoti Sarma, along
with senior officials of the Energy Department and OPTCL.
Speaking at the launch, Deputy Chief Minister Singh Deo said
that the deployment of this advanced equipment will significantly reduce the
time taken to locate and repair cable faults. Consequently, any disruption in
the power supply can be restored rapidly, further enhancing the reliability,
stability, and efficiency of the state's power transmission system.
OPTCL has procured the world-class Megger R30 Van-Mounted
Cable Fault Location and Testing System with an investment of ₹9.8
crore, marking another milestone in strengthening Odisha’s underground power cable maintenance and fault-detection
capabilities. The sophisticated van-mounted unit is engineered to detect
underground power cable faults with exceptional speed, precision, and safety,
enabling maintenance teams to restore power more efficiently while minimizing
service interruptions.
The Megger R30 integrates a suite of advanced diagnostic technologies, including Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR), Arc Reflection Method (ARM), Surge Pinpointing, and Sheath Fault Testing. These technologies enable engineers to accurately identify and pinpoint faults in high-voltage underground power cables within a significantly shorter time, accelerating repair operations and reducing downtime in the transmission network.
The addition of the advanced fault location and testing system underscores OPTCL’s continued commitment to embracing modern testing and diagnostic technologies as part of its broader strategy to achieve technical excellence in power transmission. By enhancing the speed and accuracy of fault detection, the corporation aims to strengthen the resilience of Odisha’s transmission infrastructure while ensuring safer operations and improved network performance.
