As households across the country gear up for Diwali by cleaning, decorating and giving their homes a festive makeover, dental experts have urged people not to overlook oral hygiene, stressing that maintaining healthy teeth and gums deserves as much attention as keeping their surroundings clean.

Highlighting the importance of dental care during the festive season, Dr Sonia Datta, in her perspective titled 'Diwali Ki Safai Se Daanton Ki Safai Tak: Maintaining Oral Health During the Festive Season', said celebrations, late-night gatherings and increased consumption of sweets and snacks often disrupt regular oral hygiene routines.

While festive indulgences are an integral part of celebrations, irregular brushing and frequent consumption of sugary foods can increase the risk of tooth decay, gum problems and other oral health complications, she said.

Dental professionals point out that plaque accumulates on teeth every day and needs to be removed through consistent oral care. If left unchecked, it can contribute to cavities and gum-related problems, making daily dental hygiene particularly important during periods of celebration.

Experts recommend brushing twice a day, cleaning between teeth, limiting frequent consumption of sweets and snacks, and maintaining proper oral hygiene before bedtime to safeguard dental health.

"Just as we do not clean our homes only once a year, our teeth too require regular care rather than occasional attention," is the central message of the oral health awareness initiative, which encourages people to make dental hygiene an essential part of their festive preparations.

The choice of toothpaste also plays an important role in maintaining an effective daily oral care routine. Dabur Red Paste, which combines Ayurvedic ingredients such as Laung ka Tail (clove oil), Tomar Beej (Zanthoxylum armatum) and Pudina Satva (mint), is positioned as a daily oral care option.

While clove oil is traditionally known for its germ-fighting properties and support in relieving tooth discomfort, Tomar Beej is associated with strengthening teeth and gums, while mint provides a refreshing sensation. The toothpaste carries the Indian Dental Association (IDA) Seal of Acceptance.

As families prepare to celebrate Diwali with enthusiasm, dental experts emphasise that oral health should not take a backseat amid festive engagements. Maintaining simple and consistent hygiene practices can help prevent dental problems and ensure healthy smiles well beyond the festive season.
