Prime Minister
Narendra Modi on Sunday lauded Sujata Bhuyan from Odisha’s Sambalpur district
for her remarkable success in fish farming, describing her journey as a shining
example of women-led entrepreneurship and self-reliance that is transforming
lives at the grassroots.
Speaking during his
monthly radio programme Mann Ki Baat,
the Prime Minister highlighted the vital contribution of India’s fishing
community to the country’s economic progress. He observed that fishermen
venture into the sea before dawn, playing a crucial role in sustaining
livelihoods and strengthening the nation’s growth story through their hard work
and resilience.
Modi also underscored
the government’s continued efforts to empower the fisheries sector through initiatives
such as port development, insurance coverage and the adoption of technology to
address changing weather conditions. He noted that innovation in fisheries and
emerging opportunities in seaweed cultivation are opening new avenues for
individuals to become self-reliant and financially secure.
Reflecting on Sujata
Bhuyan’s inspiring journey, the Prime Minister said she was once a homemaker
who aspired to contribute to her family’s income by doing something meaningful.
Determined to chart her own path, she began fish farming in the vast waters of
the Hirakud Reservoir a few years ago, despite facing several challenges during
the early phase.
Bhuyan had to
overcome hurdles such as unpredictable weather, arranging adequate feed for
fish and balancing her household responsibilities. Yet, her unwavering
determination and perseverance helped her turn adversity into opportunity.
Within just two to
three years, her efforts blossomed into a thriving enterprise. Today, her
success story is inspiring many women in the community to explore similar
ventures, reinforcing the growing momentum of women-led development in rural
India.
Sujata Bhuyan’s
journey stands as a powerful reminder that with courage, innovation and
persistence, ordinary individuals can create extraordinary change, paving the
way for inclusive growth and a more self-reliant nation.
