The sacred Grand Road (Bada Danda) of the pilgrim city of
Puri transformed into a sea of devotion and spiritual ecstasy on Saturday as
the Trinity — Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra — appeared in
their resplendent Suna Besha (Golden
Attire) atop their majestic chariots, captivating lakhs of devotees with a
breathtaking display of divine grandeur.
A day after the Bahuda Yatra on Friday, the sibling deities
were adorned with priceless gold ornaments in a centuries-old ritual that
symbolizes their supreme royal and divine stature. The elaborate adornment
included glittering golden crowns (Mukuta), Chandrika, golden hands and feet,
sacred Chakras, necklaces, armlets, and other exquisite ornaments. Bathed in
the brilliance of the July sun, the richly decorated deities radiated celestial
splendour, while the towering chariots shimmered like golden palaces, creating
an unforgettable spiritual spectacle.
The area around the Singhadwara
(Lion's Gate) of the Shree Jagannath Temple reverberated with the devotional
chants of "Jai Jagannath" as thousands of pilgrims from across the
country and abroad gathered to witness the rare and highly auspicious darshan.
The divine vision of Mahaprabhu in golden attire filled devotees with profound
faith, joy, and reverence, reinforcing the timeless spiritual bond between the
Lord and His countless followers.
Temple servitors meticulously performed the sacred rituals,
decorating the deities with finely crafted gold plates, floral garlands, and traditional
ornaments in accordance with ancient temple customs. The magnificent chariots —
Nandighosha of Lord Jagannath, Taladhwaja of Lord Balabhadra, and Darpadalana
of Devi Subhadra — stood majestically on the Grand Road, serving as the sacred
platforms for one of the most cherished rituals of the annual Rath Yatra.
The ongoing Rath Yatra 2026, which commenced on July 16, has once again attracted an overwhelming influx of pilgrims from every corner of India and several parts of the world. Despite heavy traffic on the Bhubaneswar–Puri route and massive crowds throughout the day, the atmosphere remained peaceful and spiritually vibrant. Extensive security arrangements and efficient crowd management by temple authorities and law enforcement agencies ensured the smooth conduct of the grand festival.
Suna Besha is one of the five sacred occasions in a year when the deities are adorned with gold ornaments. However, the Suna Besha observed on the chariots during the annual Rath Yatra holds exceptional religious significance, as it offers devotees the rare opportunity to have darshan of the Trinity outside the sanctum of the temple. According to age-old belief, witnessing the deities in their dazzling golden attire brings divine blessings, prosperity, protection, and spiritual fulfilment, making the occasion one of the most eagerly awaited and revered events in the Jagannath tradition.
