In a significant
boost to India’s sustainable metals industry, Hindalco Industries Ltd’s Aditya
Aluminium unit at Lapanga has achieved the prestigious certification under the
Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) Performance Standard V3.1 (2023) with
Provisional status, marking a major milestone in responsible aluminium
production and global sustainability compliance.
The certification
recognizes the facility’s operations in manufacturing and exporting high-purity
primary aluminium in multiple forms and specifications, including pig ingots,
sow ingots, and primary foundry alloys. The certification also covers the
plant’s integrated 900 MW captive power facility that supports its large-scale
smelting operations at Aditya Aluminium, Lapanga.
Announcing the
development, the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative confirmed that Aditya
Aluminium has successfully met the requirements of the ASI Performance Standard
V3.1 (2023). The facility operates a primary aluminium smelter with a rated
production capacity of 360 kilotonnes per annum. Its operations include
advanced electrolytic potline processes, casthouse production activities, and
anode manufacturing, enabling the production of pig ingots, sow ingots, primary
foundry alloys, and liquid aluminium. Alongside its core production
infrastructure, the facility operates a dedicated captive power plant while
also integrating renewable energy generation into its production ecosystem.
The ASI Certification
program has been developed through a comprehensive multi-stakeholder
consultation process and remains the only voluntary sustainability standard
initiative that covers the entire aluminium value chain. The ASI Performance
Standard V3 and the ASI Chain of Custody (CoC) Standard V2 were introduced in
May 2022 after a multi-year revision process aimed at strengthening global
sustainability benchmarks for the industry.
The ASI Performance
Standard V3 framework establishes 11 principles and 62 criteria across three
key sustainability pillars — Environment, Social, and Governance. The framework
seeks to address critical sustainability challenges in the aluminium sector,
including biodiversity protection, Indigenous Peoples’ rights, circular economy
practices, and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.
In 2023, the standards underwent a minor update involving editorial refinements, correction of minor errors, and further clarifications. This revision culminated in the release of Performance Standard V3.1 (2023) and Chain of Custody Standard V2.1 (2023), strengthening the certification’s clarity and operational guidance for companies across the aluminium value chain.
The provisional certification provides companies in the aluminium sector with a strategic and flexible pathway to align with ASI’s sustainability framework. It enables industry participants to adopt the standards, strengthen their practices over a defined period, and work towards achieving Full Certification at the earliest feasible opportunity while demonstrating commitment to responsible production and sustainable industrial growth.
