India’s power sector has scripted a historic milestone in FY 2025–26, with total generation capacity additions crossing 52,537 MW as of January 31, marking the highest ever in a single financial year and underscoring the country’s accelerating energy transition.

The latest addition represents an increase of over 11 percent to the nation’s total installed capacity in just ten months, taking India’s overall power generation capacity to 520,510.95 MW. The achievement comfortably surpasses the previous annual record of 34,054 MW set in FY 2024–25, reflecting both strong policy push and robust project execution across conventional and clean energy segments.

Renewable energy dominated the capacity expansion, contributing 39,657 MW — nearly three-fourths of the total additions. Solar power alone accounted for an impressive 34,955 MW, reaffirming its position as the fastest-growing energy source in the country. Wind capacity additions stood at 4,613 MW, indicating a steady revival of the segment after a period of slower growth.

The surge has significantly strengthened India’s non-fossil fuel portfolio, which now stands at 271,969.33 MW, overtaking fossil fuel-based capacity of 248,541.62 MW. Renewable energy sources constitute 263,189.33 MW of the total, while nuclear power contributes 8,780 MW.

The milestone reflects India’s dual strategy of meeting rising electricity demand while advancing its climate commitments through rapid clean energy deployment.
