Tata Steel Kalinganagar (TSK) and Neelachal Ispat Nigam Limited (NINL) commemorated the 167th birth anniversary of Sir Dorabji Tata, the pioneering industrialist and first Chairman of Tata Steel, with floral tributes and a series of programmes on Thursday. The celebrations paid tribute to his enduring legacy of ethical corporate governance, employee welfare and promotion of sports in India.

At Tata Steel Kalinganagar, the celebrations commenced with a homage ceremony at the Sir Dorabji Tata Sports Complex in Kalinganagar Township. Uttam Singh, Vice President–Operations, TSK, and Rabindra Kumar Jamuda, President, Tata Steel Kalinganagar Workers’ Union, attended the ceremony as Chief Guest and Guest of Honour, respectively.

Senior officials, union representatives and employees of Tata Steel Kalinganagar were also present on the occasion. Various sporting events were organised for employees and their family members as part of the celebrations.

At NINL, a ceremony was organised in the presence of Padmapal, MD & CEO, NINL, along with senior officials of the company. A similar tribute ceremony was also held at the Ferro Alloys Plant, Bamnipal.

Sir Dorabji Tata, the first Chairman of Tata Steel, played a defining role in shaping the company’s values and establishing progressive standards of corporate governance and employee welfare that were far ahead of their time. Under his leadership, Tata Steel introduced several pioneering initiatives, including the eight-hour workday, maternity leave, provident fund, accident compensation and free medical aid—many of which were introduced long before they became statutory requirements.

A passionate sportsman from his early years, Sir Dorabji Tata also made a lasting contribution to the development of Indian sport. As the first President of the Indian Olympic Association, he played a pivotal role in facilitating India’s participation in the Olympic Games.

The commemorative programmes at TSK and NINL served as a reminder of Sir Dorabji Tata’s enduring legacy and the values of excellence, integrity, employee welfare and nation-building that continue to inspire the Tata Group.
