Hindalco Industries Ltd, the metals flagship of the Aditya Birla Group, has commissioned India’s first super specialty alumina manufacturing plant in Belagavi, Karnataka, marking a significant step towards strengthening domestic production of advanced fire-safety materials.

The greenfield facility, with an initial annual production capacity of 30,000 tonnes, will manufacture Superfine PPT ATH (Precipitated Aluminium Trihydrate), a high-value, halogen-free flame-retardant material used in fire-safe cables, polymer insulators, thermal insulation, composites and paints.

“Hindalco Industries ... has commissioned a greenfield Superfine PPT ATH (Precipitated Aluminium Trihydrate) manufacturing plant in Belagavi, Karnataka, bringing domestic production of this high-value specialty alumina product to India for the first time,” the company said in a statement.

PPT ATH plays a crucial role in suppressing flame propagation and reducing smoke generation without releasing halogen acid gases, making it increasingly important for modern fire-safety applications.

The new facility comes at a time when demand for advanced flame-retardant materials is rising, driven by stricter fire-safety standards, rapid electric vehicle adoption, expanding infrastructure and the growing shift towards sustainable, high-performance materials.

Hindalco said the plant’s first-phase capacity of 30,000 tonnes per annum has been designed to meet almost the entire domestic demand for safer cable applications from India’s wire and cable industry. The facility is also designed for phased expansion to 60,000 tonnes per annum, allowing the company to scale production in line with market growth.

Adding a strong sustainability dimension to the project, the facility is designed to operate entirely on renewable energy, making it the world’s only specialty alumina plant to run fully on renewable power and setting a new benchmark for sustainable manufacturing.

Hindalco is India’s leading producer of specialty alumina, manufacturing more than 120 grades of non-metallurgical specialty alumina. Its diversified portfolio serves critical industries including refractories, ceramics, wire and cable, railways, batteries and electronics, water treatment and bulk chemicals.
