Tata Power Renewable Energy Ltd (TPREL) has commissioned a 72.5 MW captive solar power project at Kalasar in Rajasthan's Bikaner district, developed to supply green energy to Tata Steel Ltd, marking another step in the steel major's decarbonisation drive.

The project, operated through TP Vardhman Surya Ltd, a subsidiary of TPREL, is expected to generate around 166 million units (MUs) of green electricity annually and offset approximately 1,18,856 tonnes of carbon emissions every year.

The solar project deploys 1,71,360 modules manufactured by TP Solar Ltd, integrating large-scale renewable generation with technology-led solutions, TPREL said in a statement on Thursday.

The commissioning strengthens TPREL's role in supporting industrial decarbonisation while adding to India's renewable energy capacity.

"This project underscores TPREL's strong engineering expertise and execution excellence, highlighting our capability to deliver complex, technology-driven renewable energy assets within demanding timelines," the company said.

TPREL said it remains focused on developing clean energy infrastructure that can enhance grid resilience, support industrial decarbonisation and contribute to India's low-carbon energy transition.

The company caters to a diverse range of sectors, including utilities, data centres, communications, IT, petrochemicals, steel, automobiles, FMCG and biotechnology.

With the addition of the Tata Steel project, TPREL's total renewable utility capacity has reached 12.3 GW.

Of this, around 7 GW is operational, comprising 5.7 GW of solar and 1.3 GW of wind capacity, while nearly 5.3 GW is under various stages of implementation.

The projects under implementation include 2.2 GW of solar and 3.1 GW of wind capacity, which are expected to be commissioned in phases over the next six to 24 months, TPREL said.

The company continues to expand its renewable energy portfolio in line with India's target of achieving 500 GW of non-fossil fuel-based capacity by 2030 and Tata Power's broader vision of a sustainable energy future.
