The Department of
Posts on Monday released a special commemorative cover to mark the 20th
anniversary of the Kalinga Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS), celebrating
the institution’s two-decade journey in medical education, healthcare and
service to society.
Speaking on the
occasion, Nirmaljit Singh, Chief Postmaster General, Odisha Circle, lauded the
contribution of doctors and healthcare institutions to society, describing
doctors as “angels serving the nation and the people”.
Singh said the life
of Prof. Achyuta Samanta, Founder of KIIT, KISS and KIMS, had been dedicated to
the service of the nation. Highlighting the extensive reach of India Post, he
said the country has around 1.64 lakh post offices, making it the largest
postal network in the world, while Odisha has nearly 8,900 post offices.
“We have been part and parcel of every facet
of life,” Singh said, adding that India Post was increasingly focusing on
citizen-centric services and providing a wide range of services to the people.
Dean and Principal of
KIMS, Prof. R. C. Das, described the institution’s students as its “brand
ambassadors”. He said the growth of KIMS had been possible because of the
leadership and vision of its Founder, Prof. Achyuta Samanta.
“The next decade will unfurl a new chapter for
KIIT,” Prof. Das said, adding that 20 years of KIMS was not the culmination of
its journey but the beginning of a new one.
KIIT Vice Chancellor Prof. Saranjit Singh said KIMS had emerged as one of the biggest healthcare service providers in eastern India. Pointing to the growing importance of medical tourism, he said around four to five lakh foreign nationals come to India for medical treatment every year, and KIMS had a significant role to play in strengthening Odisha’s position as a healthcare destination.
