In a major step toward strengthening healthcare infrastructure in
Odisha’s mineral-rich but underserved regions, JSW Foundation on Tuesday laid
the foundation stone for a 100-bed multi-specialty hospital at Koira. The
project, a flagship social initiative of the JSW Group, is the vision of
Chairman Sajjan Jindal and JSW Foundation Chairperson Sangita Jindal, aimed at
transforming access to quality medical care for communities in the remote
mining belts of Sundargarh and Keonjhar districts.
Being developed under the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility
initiatives, the hospital is designed to address long-standing healthcare gaps
in the region, where access to modern medical facilities has remained limited.
The ground-breaking ceremony was attended by Business Head of JSW Steel,
Odisha Mining Division, Prasanna Panda; East Zone Head of JSW Foundation, Prasanta
Biswal; HR Head of JSW Steel, Odisha Mining Division, Chittaranjan Bahanipati;
along with other senior officials.
Speaking on the occasion, Panda said, “This hospital is not just an
infrastructure project; it is a commitment to the health, dignity and
well-being of the communities around us. The people of Koira, Sundargarh and
Keonjhar have long deserved access to quality medical care, and we are proud to
take a meaningful step toward fulfilling that need. We believe this facility will
create lasting positive impact for generations.”
The hospital will be developed on 4.5 acres in a phased manner, beginning
with a 100-bed facility equipped with multiple departments to provide
affordable and comprehensive healthcare services. It will house specialties
such as Orthopedics, Gynecology, Pediatrics, Dermatology, Ophthalmology, ENT
and General Medicine, supported by advanced diagnostic laboratories that will
significantly reduce the need for patients to travel long distances for tests
and treatment.
To ensure sustained medical services in this remote location, the project
also includes residential and recreational facilities for doctors and
healthcare personnel within the campus. Given the high-risk nature of mining
activities in the area, the hospital is expected to play a vital role in
handling emergency and accident cases with timely, specialized care.
Highlighting the broader social impact of the initiative, Mr. Biswal said, “Healthcare accessibility in remote mining regions has always been a challenge. This project reflects our deep responsibility towards the communities that coexist with us. With specialized medical services, diagnostic facilities and a nursing training institute, this hospital will not only treat people but also empower local youth with opportunities in the healthcare sector.”
The Koira Multi-Specialty Hospital underscores JSW’s long-term commitment to community development and improved quality of life in mining-affected regions. Through the JSW Foundation, the group continues to implement a wide range of social initiatives in the Joda and Koida blocks, spanning healthcare, education, sanitation, drinking water and sports, reinforcing its focus on inclusive and sustainable growth.
