Kalinga Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS), Bhubaneswar, has added another specialised service to its growing super-speciality healthcare portfolio with the establishment of a dedicated Department of Endocrine Surgery — the first academic department of its kind in Eastern India. The new department aims to bring advanced surgical treatment for complex endocrine and breast disorders closer to patients in Odisha and the eastern region. Regular OPD services are already available.

Prof. S. K. Mishra, an endocrine surgeon of national repute with decades of experience in clinical practice, teaching and research, has joined the department as Professor Emeritus. Prof. Mishra established India’s first Department of Endocrine Surgery at SGPGIMS, Lucknow.

Dr. Sushobhan Pradhan, who completed his M.Ch. in Endocrine Surgery from SGPGIMS and is the first person from Odisha to obtain the degree, has joined KIMS as Associate Professor.

The department will provide specialised surgical care for a wide range of endocrine disorders, including diseases of the thyroid gland such as goitre, thyroid nodules and thyroid cancer. It will also manage parathyroid disorders that can lead to elevated blood calcium levels, kidney stones and bone disease, as well as adrenal gland tumours, including those associated with high blood pressure and hormonal disturbances.

In addition to endocrine surgery, the department will offer comprehensive surgical care for breast diseases, ranging from benign breast lumps to breast cancer. Until now, patients requiring specialised surgical treatment for several of these conditions often had to travel outside Odisha.

With the establishment of the new department, patients can access such specialised care at KIMS, supported by multidisciplinary collaboration with the departments of Endocrinology, Nuclear Medicine, Radiology and Pathology. The department also plans to develop into an academic and training centre for endocrine and breast surgery in the region.

The addition marks another step in KIMS Bhubaneswar’s efforts to expand access to advanced and affordable healthcare through state-of-the-art infrastructure, specialised medical expertise and a strong emphasis on innovation, education and patient safety.
