Strengthening its
leadership in advanced healthcare in Odisha, the Orthopaedic Department of
Kalinga Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS), Bhubaneswar, has introduced the
state-of-the-art CORI robotic system for joint replacement surgeries. This
cutting-edge technology marks a significant step towards enhancing surgical
precision, improving patient outcomes, and ensuring faster recovery.
Highlighting the
impact of the new system, Head of the Orthopaedic Department, Dr. Debasish
Mishra, noted that robotic-assisted procedures are transforming joint
replacement by addressing long-standing challenges such as post-operative pain,
extended rehabilitation, and patient dissatisfaction. By combining advanced
robotics with surgical expertise, KIMS aims to deliver more accurate and
patient-centric treatment.
The CORI robotic
platform, developed by global medical technology leader Smith+Nephew, offers
image-free, real-time surgical planning, eliminating the need for pre-operative
CT scans. Using advanced 3D mapping, the system enables surgeons to perform
highly personalised knee replacement procedures tailored to each patient’s
anatomy. Its compact, handheld robotic device with haptic feedback enhances
surgical safety by accurately distinguishing between bone and surrounding soft
tissues such as ligaments and blood vessels.
The system further
allows real-time validation and adjustment of surgical precision during
procedures, while its advanced burr-based cutting mechanism ensures highly
accurate bone preparation and implant positioning. Additionally, the use of
Oxinium (oxidised zirconium) implants enhances durability and is particularly
beneficial for patients with metal sensitivities.
Designed as a
versatile platform, the CORI system supports a wide range of procedures,
including primary, revision, and partial knee replacements, as well as hip
surgeries, making it a comprehensive solution for joint care.
The introduction of
this advanced technology has been made possible under the visionary leadership
of Dr. Achyuta Samanta, Founder of KIIT and KIMS, who continues to champion
world-class healthcare infrastructure in Odisha with a focus on innovation,
compassion, and excellence.
With the addition of the CORI robotic system, KIMS sets a new benchmark in orthopaedic care, reinforcing its commitment to delivering precision-driven treatment and improved quality of life for patients.
The CORI robotic system offers image-free, real-time surgical planning, eliminating the need for pre-operative CT scans and enabling quicker, more efficient procedures. It supports a modern, highly personalised approach to knee replacement by using real-time 3D mapping of the patient’s anatomy, ensuring exceptional accuracy. The compact, handheld robotic device with advanced haptic technology enhances surgical safety by precisely distinguishing between bone and surrounding soft tissues such as ligaments and blood vessels. Surgeons can validate and adjust bone cuts in real time based on soft tissue balance during the procedure, improving overall outcomes. The system also features an advanced burr-based cutting mechanism that allows highly precise bone preparation with real-time tracking, ensuring optimal implant positioning while preserving healthy bone. Additionally, it supports the use of advanced Oxinium (oxidised zirconium) implants, known for their superior durability and suitability for patients with metal sensitivities. Designed as a versatile platform, the CORI system is equipped with built-in software programmes for a wide range of procedures, including primary, revision, and partial knee replacements, as well as hip surgeries, making it a comprehensive solution for joint care.
