In a remarkable medical
achievement, doctors at Kalinga Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) have
successfully restored the posture of a 45-year-old man whose neck had remained
severely bent since childhood due to Ankylosing Spondylitis.
Sujit Nayak, a resident of
Trisulia in Cuttack district, had long battled the progressive condition, which
causes the spine to curve and, in advanced stages, fuse. His situation worsened
following an accident that led to a fracture and further deformity of his
already compromised spine. Over time, his head remained permanently bent
downward, leaving him unable to look up or perform basic activities such as
eating and sleeping comfortably.
Financial constraints had
prevented him from seeking advanced treatment outside Odisha. Acting on the
advice of friends, he was eventually admitted to KIMS, where a team of
specialists, led by senior spine surgeon Dr. Jitendra Kumar Rout, took up the
challenging case.
Despite significant risks, the
team carried out a highly complex eight-hour corrective spine surgery. “We took
this as a challenge. The patient can now walk straight and lead a normal life.
It is like he has been given a new lease of life,” said Dr Rout.
Following the successful procedure,
Nayak has regained the ability to sit upright, lift his head, and carry out
everyday activities independently. Doctors described the outcome as a result of
meticulous planning, coordinated teamwork, and the use of advanced surgical
techniques.
Dr Rout also attributed the success to the state-of-the-art infrastructure at KIMS and the vision of its founder, Dr. Achyuta Samanta, in ensuring access to advanced and affordable healthcare.
The case stands as a testament to the growing capabilities of Odisha’s healthcare institutions in handling complex and high-risk surgical interventions.
