KALINGANAGAR, MARCH 16, 2026

Odisha’s industrial momentum is set to gain fresh strength as Neelachal Ispat Nigam Limited (NINL) prepares to launch the first phase of a major capacity expansion, scaling up its steelmaking capability from the existing 1 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) to 4.8 MTPA after receiving Environmental Clearance from the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Government of India.

The milestone marks a significant step in the revival and transformation of the Kalinganagar-based steel plant since its acquisition by Tata Steel in July 2022. Following the takeover, the facility staged a remarkable turnaround by restarting operations within just 100 days and achieving its original rated capacity in less than a year, signaling renewed investor confidence in Odisha’s industrial ecosystem.

The blueprint includes the establishment of a Coke Oven and By Product Plant, a Sinter Plant, a new Blast Furnace, a Rebar Mill, a Coil Mill, and a Wire Rod Mill in the second phase. Supporting infrastructure such as a Desulphurisation Unit, Lime Calcination Plant, and a Captive Power Plant will further strengthen the plant’s operational backbone.

The company also plans to incorporate advanced technologies to improve production efficiency, reliability, and environmental performance. The project will deploy comprehensive pollution control systems including electrostatic precipitators, cyclone separators, dry fog systems, bag filters, mechanised water sprinkling, and other advanced emission reduction measures to ensure environmentally responsible operations.

Industry observers believe the expansion will significantly boost economic activity in the Kalinganagar region, generating opportunities for ancillary industries, service providers, logistics operators, and local enterprises. By strengthening linkages across the steel value chain, the project is expected to deepen the integration of the regional economy with national and global markets while supporting community development and sustainable growth.

Looking ahead, the company has outlined an even more ambitious roadmap. In the second phase, NINL plans to scale up production capacity to 9.5 MTPA, a move expected to unlock greater industrial investment and reinforce Odisha’s position as one of India’s most dynamic steel manufacturing hubs.
