Nobel Laureate in Economics and University of Chicago Professor Michael
Kremer called on Odisha Chief Secretary Anu Garg at Lokseva Bhawan on Tuesday,
marking a significant engagement that underscored the State’s growing
recognition for evidence-based governance and social sector innovation.
The high-level meeting focused on Odisha’s developmental trajectory, particularly
its progress in health, education, and welfare delivery. Discussions revolved
around the application of innovative and data-driven approaches in the
implementation of government schemes and programmes, with an emphasis on
improving outcomes through scientific policy design and rigorous monitoring
frameworks.
Professor Kremer, globally renowned for pioneering work in experimental development economics, appreciated Odisha’s administrative efficiency and its structured, research-oriented approach to public policy. He acknowledged the State’s efforts to integrate evidence-based methodologies into governance and noted that such models hold strong potential for scalable and sustainable impact in social development.
Chief Secretary Anu Garg highlighted Odisha’s commitment to strengthening programme delivery through technology adoption, real-time data systems, and outcome-focused planning. She also explored avenues for deeper collaboration with Professor Kremer, particularly in leveraging behavioural insights and randomized evaluations to further enhance the effectiveness of flagship welfare initiatives.
