BONGAIGAON, JANUARY 31, 2026

In a stirring testament to grit, resilience, and unwavering determination, Cheme Serdeon, Senior Manager (P&S), NTPC Bongaigaon, and a native of Gangtok, Sikkim, successfully scaled Mount Kilimanjaro on January 23, 2026, marking a proud and inspiring milestone for the NTPC family.

Towering at an imposing 5,895 metres (19,341 feet) above sea level, Mount Kilimanjaro, famously known as the Roof of Africa, is the world’s tallest free-standing mountain and is located in northeastern Tanzania. Ms Serdeon reached the summit via the Lemosho Route, an eight-day expedition regarded as one of the most scenic and well-established paths to the peak, demanding both physical endurance and mental fortitude.

Adding a deeply personal and emotional dimension to this extraordinary feat, Serdeon undertook the expedition alongside her parents, Pema Tsomo Bhutia and Tshering Tashi Bhutia. Displaying exceptional courage and determination, her parents trekked up to an altitude of 5,200 metres, stopping just 695 metres short of the summit due to physical constraints. Their presence throughout the arduous journey, coupled with constant encouragement and blessings, proved to be a powerful source of strength during the demanding climb.

Reflecting on her achievement, Serdeon shared that she had not undergone formal or extensive mountaineering training. Instead, it was her strong determination, mental resilience, consistent daily fitness routine, and unwavering family support that enabled her to overcome the physical, emotional, and environmental challenges posed by the high-altitude expedition.

What makes this accomplishment particularly inspiring is the fact that Cheme Serdeon conquered one of the world’s most iconic peaks without professional mountaineering credentials, relying solely on discipline, perseverance, and inner strength. Her journey stands as a powerful embodiment of the values of excellence, resilience, and determination that NTPC upholds.

Her parents’ effort in crossing the Base Camp and climbing up to 5,200 metres further underscores the spirit of courage and commitment that defined this expedition. Though they could not reach the summit, their determination and support remain integral to the success of the climb and deserve special recognition.

The NTPC family takes immense pride in Serdeon’s exemplary achievement, which not only brings laurels to NTPC Bongaigaon but also serves as a compelling source of inspiration for employees, their families, and the wider community — encouraging all to pursue their dreams with courage, conviction, and perseverance.
