Odisha has taken a
significant stride towards a sustainable and low-carbon future by emerging as
the first state in India to announce a dedicated Green Hydrogen Policy. The
landmark initiative reinforces the state’s strong commitment to industrial
decarbonization and the development of a circular economy, in alignment with
the broader sustainability objectives of the Confederation of Indian Industry
(CII).
A high-level meeting
was convened on Tuesday under the chairmanship of Deputy Chief Minister and
Minister of Agriculture & Farmers’ Empowerment and Energy, Kanak Vardhan
Singh Deo, with members of CII and key stakeholders from the renewable energy
sector to deliberate on the roadmap for accelerating clean energy adoption in
the state.
Deputy CM Singh Deo
emphasized that the policy is expected to attract substantial investments in
renewable energy, particularly in green hydrogen production, positioning Odisha
as a major hub for clean energy innovation. The state is also prioritizing the
development of disaster-resilient infrastructure, power distribution sector
reforms, and investments in emerging technologies such as floating solar
projects and Pumped Storage Projects (PSPs), integrated with Battery Energy
Storage Systems (BESS).
The Confederation of
Indian Industry appreciated Odisha’s forward-looking leadership in advancing
renewable energy initiatives, highlighting the state’s proactive approach
towards harnessing carbon capture opportunities from flue gases to reduce
industrial emissions. The industry body also acknowledged the importance of the
state’s Renewable Energy Policy 2022 in strengthening the clean energy
ecosystem.
The meeting was
attended by Additional Chief Secretary, Energy, Vishal Kumar Dev; CMD, OPTCL,
Bhaskar Jyoti Sharma; along with senior officials from the Energy Department,
OPTCL, GRIDCO, TPCODL, CII and other concerned stakeholders.
