Responding swiftly to growing regional tensions in the Middle East, the Government of Odisha has rolled out a comprehensive security and monitoring framework to safeguard Odia citizens living abroad. The decision was taken at a high-level meeting chaired by Chief Secretary Anu Garg, underscoring the state’s proactive commitment to the welfare of its diaspora during a period of heightened uncertainty.

The meeting brought together senior officials from the state’s administrative and security apparatus, including the including Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Hemant Sharma, DGP Y. B. Khurania, Director of Intelligence Raosaheb P. Koche, and Special Secretary Home, Radha Kishan Sharma, and senior officers from the Home Department, reflecting a coordinated, whole-of-government approach. Senior functionaries from the Labour Department and the Odia Language, Literature and Culture Department also contributed, ensuring that both logistical support and cultural outreach remain integral to the response mechanism.

Recognising the humanitarian sensitivity of the evolving situation, the Chief Secretary directed all concerned departments to remain on constant alert. A dedicated Working Group has been constituted, pooling expertise and resources from Odisha Paribar, the Home Department, the State Labour Directorate and the office of the Protector of Emigrants. This multi-agency framework is designed to function as a seamless safety net, addressing concerns of non-resident Odias while also supporting their families back home.

To ensure uninterrupted communication and rapid response, the Ministry of External Affairs has activated a 24-hour toll-free helpline and a dedicated WhatsApp number for Odias in the Middle East. At the state level, an Officer on Special Duty in Odisha Paribar has been designated as the Nodal Officer to coordinate information flow and provide direct assistance.

Officials noted that while the situation is being monitored with utmost seriousness, it remains under control at present. Authorities are also keeping a vigilant watch on social media platforms to curb misinformation and respond promptly to emergency requests. Reaffirming its resolve, the state government has assured citizens that all necessary measures are in place to protect the lives and interests of Odias abroad, in close coordination with the central government for any contingency support or evacuation, if required.
