In
a decisive step towards clean and sustainable urban mobility, the Odisha
government has announced that the Ama Bus service will soon operate exclusively
with electric vehicles, marking the complete phase-out of diesel-run buses from
the fleet.
Housing and Urban Development
Minister Krushna Chandra Mohapatra on Wednesday said that only electric buses
will be introduced under the Ama Bus service in the coming days, signalling a
transformative shift in the state’s public transport landscape.
The minister informed that the
existing diesel buses will be gradually scrapped and replaced with electric
buses in a phased manner, a move aimed at significantly reducing vehicular
pollution while promoting eco-friendly commuting options across urban and
semi-urban regions of Odisha. The transition is expected to not only cut carbon
emissions but also enhance the long-term sustainability of public transport
operations.
The announcement follows a
comprehensive review meeting on Ama Bus operations chaired by the minister,
during which a series of reforms were discussed to strengthen the system. Key
deliberations focused on improving passenger safety, ensuring greater
inclusivity, and expanding the reach of services to cover more areas across the
state.
