Odisha has 8,667 registered cooperative societies, of which
8,063 are functional, according to data placed by the Centre in the Lok Sabha.
The figures, based on the National Cooperative Database (NCD)
as on July 15, 2026, highlight the extensive cooperative network in the state,
with more than 93 per cent of the societies reported as functional.
The data was provided by Union Home Minister and Minister of
Cooperation Amit Shah in a written reply in the Lok Sabha.
The National Cooperative Development Corporation (NCDC) has
also extended financial assistance to the cooperative sector in Odisha across
various activities. NCDC disbursed Rs 21.85 crore to Odisha during 2021-22 to
2025-26, while a further Rs 1.53 crore was disbursed in 2026-27 up to June 30,
2026.
NCDC assistance to Odisha rose steadily in recent years, from
Rs 4.07 crore in 2021-22 to Rs 7.03 crore in 2025-26. The assistance has
covered activities including marketing, service cooperatives, dairy and
livestock, farmer producer organisations (FPOs), fisheries, fisheries FPOs,
computerisation and storage.
Among the activities, FPOs have emerged as a significant
component of NCDC support in Odisha. Assistance under this category stood at Rs
2.22 crore in 2025-26, besides Rs 2.04 crore in 2023-24 and Rs 1.95 crore in
2024-25. Fisheries FPOs also received Rs 3.55 crore in 2025-26, up from Rs 2.47
crore in the preceding year.
Odisha has also received Rs 25.07 crore under the Central
Share of the Computerization of PACS project, with Rs 18.07 crore released in
2025-26 and Rs 7 crore in 2026-27. The project is aimed at bringing functional
Primary Agricultural Credit Societies onto a common ERP-based national software
platform.
The Centre's data also shows that NCDC's assistance to Odisha has increased sharply compared with the beginning of the five-year period. The state received Rs 4.06 crore in 2021-22, Rs 1.61 crore in 2022-23, Rs 3.24 crore in 2023-24, Rs 5.89 crore in 2024-25 and Rs 7.03 crore in 2025-26.
The figures come against the backdrop of the Centre's broader push to strengthen cooperatives under the vision of "Sahakar-se-Samriddhi", with measures aimed at expanding access to finance, technology and banking services for rural cooperative institutions.
