Prime Minister
Narendra Modi on Sunday inaugurated the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) Rs
169-crore data centre and Cybersecurity Training Institute at Info Valley-II in
Jatni near Bhubaneswar, giving a major boost to the country’s digital financial
infrastructure and cybersecurity capabilities.
Spread across 18.55
acres, the state-of-the-art facility is designed to meet the RBI’s critical
computing requirements and strengthen the security, resilience and reliability
of India’s financial systems amid the rapid expansion of digital financial
services.
The data centre will
host mission-critical payment and settlement systems and other flagship
initiatives, providing a secure and scalable technological backbone for the
country’s growing digital economy.
The accompanying
Cybersecurity Training Institute will serve as a dedicated centre for training,
research and capacity building in cybersecurity and enterprise technology,
helping develop specialised expertise and strengthen the technical capabilities
of the financial sector.
The foundation stone
for the facility was laid by then RBI governor Shaktikanta Das on March 22,
2023.
The Jatni facility is
expected to be the RBI’s second data centre in the country after its existing
centre in Navi Mumbai, according to Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi.
The location was
selected keeping in view its geographical stability, with its distance from
seismically active zones and high-risk international border areas expected to
minimise exposure to natural disasters and geopolitical vulnerabilities.
Union Finance
Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra, Odisha Governor Braj
Mohan Ram, Majhi, Union Tribal Affairs Minister Jual Oram and Deputy Chief
Ministers Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo and Pravati Parida were present at the
inauguration.
In a social media
post, Majhi said the new facility would contribute to Odisha’s development. He
also noted that Modi’s visit was his ninth to the state since the BJP
government assumed office in 2024.
Modi arrived at Biju
Patnaik International Airport in Bhubaneswar at 4.15 pm aboard a special Indian
Air Force aircraft. He then travelled by helicopter to Khordha before
proceeding by road to the RBI facility in Jatni.
Elaborate security arrangements were made for the visit, with around 2,100 police personnel deployed. Traffic restrictions were also imposed between 5.40 pm and 6.40 pm along the route connecting the RBI facility to the airport.
The new infrastructure is expected to provide the RBI with a secure, resilient, scalable and future-ready computing ecosystem, reinforcing the technological foundations underpinning the country’s financial system.
