Amid the recent
nationwide shortage of propane, SAIL-run Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) has taken
proactive steps to optimize resource utilization and ensure uninterrupted
operations at Steel Melting Shop-II (SMS-II).
Submerged Entry
Nozzle (SEN) heating, a critical requirement for the continuous functioning of
caster machines, has traditionally depended on propane. To address supply
constraints and curb propane consumption, the SMS-II team has successfully
converted the SEN heating systems of Caster-I, II and III from propane to mixed
gas.
All required
arrangements and infrastructure for the transition have been commissioned using
in-house expertise and available resources, showcasing the plant’s robust
technical capability and strong commitment to operational excellence.
The initiative was undertaken under the overall guidance of M G Srikanth, CGM (SMS-II). It was conceptualized under the leadership of Satyabadi Mahapatra, Head of Mechanical, and efficiently executed by the team led by D Mishra, GM (Mechanical), and L K Dash, DGM (Mechanical), CCM, SMS-II.
This innovative move is expected to significantly reduce dependence on propane while ensuring smooth and uninterrupted caster operations, reinforcing RSP’s continued focus on efficiency, sustainability, and self-reliance.
