Odisha’s government medical education sector has received a
major national recognition, with three of the state’s premier government
medical colleges finding a place in the Indian Institutional Ranking Framework
(IIRF) 2026 rankings and SCB Medical College and Hospital, Cuttack, emerging as
the highest-ranked institution from the state at the 15th position nationally.
SCB Medical College and Hospital has also secured a
distinction by ranking ahead of AIIMS Bhubaneswar, which has been placed 16th
in the latest rankings, marking a notable achievement for Odisha’s
government-run medical education and healthcare institutions.
The rankings placed Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical
Sciences and Research (VIMSAR), Burla, at the 64th position, while MKCG Medical
College and Hospital, Berhampur, secured the 74th rank.
The performance of the three institutions has highlighted the
growing national presence of Odisha’s government medical colleges and
underlined the progress being made in medical education, healthcare delivery
and institutional development across the state.
Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr Mukesh Mahaling
congratulated the doctors, faculty members, students, nursing officers, health
workers, administrative officers and other staff members of the institutions
for the achievement.
“This ranking is not
only a success for us but also an inspiration to take the government medical
colleges of Odisha to even higher positions at the national level,” Mahaling
said.
The minister said the state government was working to further
strengthen medical education, research, modern infrastructure and quality
healthcare in Odisha.
“Under the guidance of
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the leadership of Chief Minister Mohan Charan
Majhi, the state government is continuously making efforts towards
strengthening medical education, research, modern infrastructure and quality
healthcare. This trend will continue in the future,” he said.
The recognition assumes significance as Odisha’s government medical institutions continue to expand their presence in national rankings, with three of the state’s leading medical colleges featuring among the institutions assessed under the IIRF 2026 rankings.
The latest rankings are being seen as an important recognition of the sustained efforts to improve the quality of medical education and healthcare services in the state’s government-run medical institutions, besides providing further impetus to ongoing initiatives in research, infrastructure and academic excellence.
