Odisha Distribution Limited (TPCODL) has recorded an overwhelming response from
consumers following the rollout of its innovative Smart vs. Static Meter
Comparison Display Initiative across Customer Care Centres in its operational
areas, underscoring the utility’s focus on transparency, trust and informed
consumer engagement.
The
initiative, conceptualised to address consumer queries and misconceptions
around smart meters, offered a first-hand, real-time comparison of smart meters
and conventional static meters operating under identical electrical loads. By
allowing consumers to physically observe and understand the metering process
through side-by-side demonstrations, TPCODL enabled greater clarity on how
smart meters function and how electricity consumption is accurately recorded.
A large
number of consumers visited the display centres, actively engaging with the
demonstrations and interacting with company representatives. The exercise
clearly demonstrated that smart meters operate on the same fundamental metering
principles as static meters, delivering precise and reliable readings. The
transparent demonstrations effectively dispelled apprehensions regarding
inflated consumption or billing, reinforcing the fact that smart meters are designed
to enhance accuracy and visibility rather than alter usage patterns.
Several
consumers expressed satisfaction after witnessing the demonstrations. Sourav
Patra, a resident of Gopabandhu Nagar, said that seeing both meters functioning
simultaneously brought complete clarity. He noted that the transparent and
easy-to-understand readings helped him better appreciate how smart meters work,
eliminating doubts and strengthening his confidence in the new system. Sajjan
Poddar, a consumer from Nayapalli, echoed similar views, highlighting the
prompt grievance redressal and accessibility of the utility. Drawing a parallel
with everyday technological advancements, he remarked that as people have
embraced smart devices in daily life, the adoption of smart meters is a natural
and positive progression.
Beyond
accuracy, smart meters offer significant consumer benefits by enabling
automated meter reading and timely, error-free billing. The availability of
real-time consumption data empowers consumers to track usage patterns more
closely, make informed decisions, and manage monthly electricity expenses more
efficiently. This enhanced visibility fosters greater control over energy
consumption while reducing disputes related to billing.
The Smart
