Former diplomat and Director General of the Manohar Parrikar
Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses (MP-IDSA), New Delhi, Sujan Chinoy
on Saturday urged students to embrace hard work, discipline and teamwork,
saying success does not come on its own and collective effort remains the key
to achieving larger goals.
Addressing the inaugural session of the 13th Model United Nations
(MUN) at KIIT International School here, Chinoy drew upon his long association
with KIIT and its Founder Prof Achyuta Samanta to underline the importance of
vision, perseverance and encouragement in shaping young minds.
Recalling a visit to Australia nearly two decades ago, when
Samanta had taken a team of young rugby players from his institutions, Chinoy
said the students performed exceptionally well despite rugby not being a
traditional Indian strength. The experience, he said, demonstrated how vision,
discipline and encouragement could help young people excel beyond conventional
boundaries.
“There is no
substitute for industriousness. Even a lion must rise and hunt; success does
not come on its own,” Chinoy told the gathering, encouraging students to
cultivate simplicity, hard work and teamwork as enduring values.
He said the achievements of any great institution were the
outcome of collective effort and a shared vision, and asked the students
participating in the MUN to make the most of the opportunity to engage with
international affairs, diplomacy and contemporary global challenges.
The two-day conference, which was formally inaugurated by
Chinoy, has brought together around 1,500 students from nearly 100 schools
across major cities including Delhi, Chennai and Kolkata. The event seeks to
provide young delegates with a platform to sharpen their critical thinking,
diplomatic skills and leadership abilities while deliberating on pressing
issues confronting the international community.
KIIT International School Principal Sanjay Suar said 13
committees have been constituted for the conference, where delegates will
participate in discussions and debates on a range of global issues.
KIIT and KISS Founder Prof Achyuta Samanta expressed
happiness over the successful organisation of the 13th edition of the MUN and
thanked Chinoy for inaugurating the event.
Recalling his first meeting with Chinoy in Australia, Samanta
described him as a distinguished diplomat with a career spanning more than four
decades and extensive expertise in international relations, defence and
policy-making.
Samanta also highlighted the achievements of KIIT and KISS in
education and sports, saying KIIT has produced more than 24 Olympians and made
significant contributions to India’s medal tally at international events,
including the World University Games and Asian Athletics Championships.
He said KIIT students had also secured multiple medals at the
Commonwealth Games and continued to make their mark in national competitions,
including the Khelo India University Games.
The MUN is aimed at nurturing an informed and globally aware
generation by giving students an opportunity to simulate the functioning of the
United Nations, debate complex international issues and seek collaborative
solutions through diplomacy and dialogue.
