MUMBAI, JANUARY 31, 2026
In a moment
charged with grief, resolve and political significance, Sunetra Pawar was on
Saturday sworn in as Maharashtra’s first woman Deputy Chief Minister, marking a
historic milestone in the state’s political journey. The 62-year-old leader
took oath days after the tragic death of her husband, Nationalist Congress
Party chief and Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, who was killed in a plane crash
in Baramati on January 28.
The
oath-taking ceremony was held at the Mumbai residence of Maharashtra Governor
Acharya Devvrat, who administered the oath amid emotional scenes and resounding
chants of “Ajit dada amar rahe.”
Chief
Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde were
present, underscoring the solidarity of the Mahayuti government during a period
of profound transition.
Sunetra
Pawar’s elevation follows her unanimous election as the leader of the NCP
legislature party earlier in the day. The Nationalist Congress Party, a key
constituent of the ruling coalition, moved swiftly to ensure continuity in
governance after the sudden loss of Ajit Pawar, one of Maharashtra’s most
influential political figures.
As Deputy
Chief Minister from the NCP quota, Sunetra Pawar will assume all portfolios
previously held by her late husband, with the exception of the finance
ministry. Her appointment is being seen as both a tribute to Ajit Pawar’s
political legacy and a decisive step by the party to maintain stability within
the state government.
Political
observers note that Sunetra Pawar’s swearing-in carries symbolic and
substantive weight. Beyond breaking a significant gender barrier in Maharashtra
politics, her rise reflects the NCP’s confidence in her ability to carry
forward its agenda at a time when the state’s political landscape remains
sensitive and closely watched.
Prime
Minister Narendra Modi extended his wishes to the new Deputy Chief Minister,
acknowledging the historic nature of her appointment and expressing confidence
in her leadership. “Best wishes to Sunetra Pawar Ji as she begins her tenure as
Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra, the first woman to hold this
responsibility. I am confident she will work tirelessly for the welfare of the
people of the state and fulfil the vision of the late Ajitdada Pawar,” the
Prime Minister said in a post on X.
