Tata Communications has
announced an investment of close to USD 450 million to build an AI super
highway in India, involving the deployment of around 10,000 km of long-haul
fibre infrastructure to connect key data centre and artificial intelligence
(AI) hubs across the country.
The proposed
high-speed, low-latency network will create one of India's largest AI-ready
connectivity infrastructures, enabling seamless data transmission between major
data centre corridors and supporting the growing computational requirements of
next-generation AI applications.
The network will be
integrated with Tata Communications' global network backbone, providing
customers with end-to-end connectivity designed to meet the performance,
resilience and scalability requirements of AI-driven workloads.
The investment comes
at a time when India's data centre industry is poised for significant
expansion, fuelled by accelerating cloud adoption, rising deployment of AI
technologies, increasing data localisation requirements and growing enterprise
demand for reliable, high-capacity digital infrastructure.
As data centre
capacity expands across the country, connectivity is emerging as a critical
component of the digital infrastructure ecosystem, alongside computing capacity
and energy availability.
The proposed AI super
highway is expected to strengthen the connectivity backbone linking India's key
data centre and AI hubs, addressing the need for faster and more reliable data
movement as AI adoption gathers pace across industries.
With AI workloads
generating growing volumes of data and requiring low-latency communication
between computing facilities, high-capacity fibre networks are becoming
increasingly important for supporting enterprise AI applications, cloud
services and other data-intensive digital operations.
Tata Communications' planned investment underscores the growing importance of robust digital connectivity in India's evolving AI ecosystem, as businesses and technology providers look to scale their infrastructure to support the next phase of digital transformation.
The company, a global communications technology player, operates an international network backbone that will be leveraged to integrate the proposed domestic infrastructure with global connectivity services.
