MUMBAI, FEBRUARY 19, 2026
In one of the most consequential technology alliances to emerge from
India’s corporate landscape, the Tata Group, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and
OpenAI have announced a multi-dimensional strategic partnership aimed at
accelerating artificial intelligence adoption across enterprise, consumer and
social sectors while laying the foundation for large-scale AI infrastructure in
the country.
The collaboration will see several thousand Tata Group employees gain
access to Enterprise ChatGPT, a move expected to significantly enhance
productivity, decision-making and innovation across group companies. In
parallel, TCS will deploy OpenAI’s Codex to strengthen software engineering
outcomes, signalling a deeper integration of generative AI into core business
processes.
A central pillar of the partnership is the co-development of
industry-specific agentic AI solutions. Combining OpenAI’s advanced AI
platforms with TCS’s contextual industry expertise, the initiative will focus
on building domain-led AI applications tailored to sectors ranging from manufacturing
and financial services to healthcare and retail. The two companies will also
launch joint go-to-market programmes to help Indian and global enterprises
deploy, integrate and scale AI solutions aligned to their organisational needs.
Equally significant is the infrastructure commitment. TCS’s HyperVault
unit has entered into a multi-year agreement with OpenAI to develop AI-ready
infrastructure in India, beginning with 100MW capacity and designed to scale up
to 1 GW. Powered by green energy and built with liquid-cooled, high-density
data centres, the platform aims to support next-generation AI workloads and
position India as a global AI hub.
The partnership also carries a strong social dimension. The OpenAI
Foundation and TCS will collaborate to deliver AI training, toolkits for NGOs
and youth-focused initiatives intended to improve the livelihoods of at least
one million young Indians by enabling responsible and scalable use of AI.
Sam Altman, CEO, OpenAI, said, “India is already leading the way in AI adoption,
and with its talent, ambition, and strong government support, it is well placed
to help shape its future. Through OpenAI for India and our partnership with
Tata Group, we’re working together to build the infrastructure, skills, and
local partnerships needed to build AI with India, for India, and in India, so
that more people across the country can access and benefit from it.”
N Chandrasekaran, Chairman, Tata Sons, said, “This deep collaboration
between OpenAI and Tata Group marks a major milestone in India’s vision to
become a global leader in AI. We are pleased to partner with OpenAI to create
state-of-the-art AI infrastructure in India. This is a unique opportunity for
OpenAI and TCS to transform industries. Together we will skill India’s youth and
empower them to succeed in the AI era.”
TCS had established HyperVault in 2025 with the ambition of delivering
gigawatt-scale, secure and AI-ready infrastructure for hyperscalers and
data-intensive enterprises. With its focus on green power, high-density compute
and multi-cloud connectivity, the platform is expected to become a critical
enabler for large-scale AI deployment.
By aligning enterprise transformation, infrastructure development and
social impact under a single strategic framework, the Tata–OpenAI collaboration
signals a shift from AI experimentation to full-scale industrial adoption,
reinforcing India’s ambition to emerge as a global leader in the AI economy.
