As
Tata Steel commemorates the 187th birth anniversary of Jamsetji Nusserwanji
Tata this March 3, the Company renews its commitment to the enduring vision
that has shaped its journey for over a century. Jamsetji Tata was not merely a
pioneering industrialist but a true nation builder. At a time when India lacked
robust industrial infrastructure, he envisioned a self-reliant nation powered
by steel. His conviction that industry must serve society laid the cornerstone
of an enterprise built on integrity, excellence, and community development. The
establishment of Tata Steel embodied a progressive model of responsible
industrialisation, long before such principles gained global prominence.
Today,
that founding vision continues to steer Tata Steel’s strategy and operations.
With a presence across India, Europe, and other geographies, the Company is
focused on building a strong, globally competitive enterprise driven by
purposeful growth. Amid a rapidly evolving global landscape shaped by
geopolitics, technological shifts, and sustainability imperatives, Tata Steel
is reinforcing its core strengths while preparing decisively for the future.
In
India, Tata Steel is accelerating its capacity expansion plans in alignment
with the nation’s infrastructure and manufacturing ambitions. The Company
intends to scale up NINL’s capacity from 1 to 9.5 MTPA and has received Board
approval for the first phase of expansion to 6.2 MTPA. Marking its entry into scrap-based
steelmaking in India, the Company is set to commission its EAF-based
steelmaking facility in Ludhiana, Punjab, shortly.
In
Europe, Tata Steel is undertaking structural transformation to enhance
competitiveness and fast-track decarbonisation. Following the closure of blast
furnaces at Port Talbot, UK, in September 2024, progress on the EAF-based unit
remains on schedule. In 2025, after extensive deliberations, the Government of
the Netherlands and Tata Steel signed a non-binding Joint Letter of Intent for
the first phase of transition towards low-emission steel production.
The
shift towards greener steelmaking represents one of the most significant
transformations in the Company’s history. Tata Steel continues to invest in
low-carbon pathways, circular processes, and energy efficiency while
maintaining competitiveness and long-term value creation. Investments in
breakthrough technologies such as Hisarna and Easymelt, along with
cross-geography collaboration to enhance performance, are part of this strategic
roadmap. Across its operations, safety, operational excellence, financial
discipline, and responsible governance remain uncompromising priorities. These
initiatives reflect a generational outlook, echoing the Founder’s belief in
building enduring institutions.
This year, Tata Steel celebrates Founder’s Day under the theme “One Vision. One Tata Steel,” underscoring its renewed emphasis on operating as a unified global organisation. A unified organisation also signifies a workplace where diverse voices are respected and empowered. As the Company deepens collaboration across geographies to leverage strengths in technology, sustainability, and innovation, it is also unlocking synergies and enhancing performance by fostering an enabling environment for the workforce of tomorrow. Tata Steel’s pioneering commitment to diversity and inclusion has resulted in landmark initiatives, including the world’s first all-women mining shift at the Noamundi iron mine and the deployment of women employees across all three shifts in Outbound Logistics at Kalinganagar. Having achieved a 20% diverse workforce in India in FY 2025, the Company now seeks to extend this benchmark across its global operations.
As Tata Steel marks Founder’s Day, it reaffirms its resolve to function as one enterprise, united by shared values and purpose, and dedicated to sustainable growth. The path ahead is clear — to build a stronger, more agile, and future-ready Tata Steel, inspired by Jamsetji Tata’s vision and driven by collective strength across the organisation.
