In a major boost to
India’s low-carbon manufacturing ambitions, Tata Steel on Monday announced an
investment of ₹11,000
crore in Jharkhand to develop advanced-grade green steel at its Jamshedpur
facility, signalling a decisive shift towards cleaner and
future-ready steelmaking technologies.
The announcement was
made by Tata Group Chairman N
Chandrasekaran in the presence of CEO T V Narendran and Jharkhand Chief
Minister Hemant Soren, underscoring the strategic importance of the eastern
state in the Tata Group’s long-term industrial roadmap.
Chandrasekaran said
the proposed investment would focus on advanced green steel technology
pioneered by the group, aimed at significantly reducing carbon emissions in
steel production while enhancing product quality. The initiative is expected to
position the Jamshedpur facility among the leading global hubs for low-carbon
steel manufacturing and strengthen India’s competitiveness in high-grade steel
exports.
He noted that the
technological advancements being developed by the Tata Group would not only
benefit its own operations but could also serve as a template for other
domestic and international steelmakers transitioning to sustainable production
methods.
In a parallel move reinforcing the group’s clean mobility ambitions, Tata Motors will invest in hydrogen-powered truck projects at the Jamshedpur complex. Chandrasekaran described the hydrogen trucking initiative as strategically significant, with strong potential to attract both domestic and global partnerships in the emerging green logistics ecosystem.
Highlighting the broader developmental agenda for the state, the Tata Group chairman said an expert panel would be constituted to explore fresh investment opportunities across multiple sectors in Jharkhand, a proposal aligned with the vision put forward by the chief minister.
