TP Southern Odisha Distribution Limited (TPSODL), a joint venture of Tata Power and the Government of Odisha, has been honoured with the Rural Power Distribution Performance Beacon Award at the prestigious Times Business Awards ceremony held in Bhubaneswar. The award, instituted by The Times of India group, was presented by the Union Minister for Education, Dharmendra Pradhan, and received by Amit Kumar Garg, CEO of TPSODL, recognising the utility’s consistent and impactful contribution to strengthening rural power distribution in Southern Odisha.

The accolade comes as a significant recognition of TPSODL’s work across eight districts—Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Nabarangpur, Kandhamal and Boudh — regions characterised by challenging terrain, dense forest cover, dispersed habitations and a large tribal population. Despite these geographical and logistical hurdles, TPSODL has ensured reliable, quality and uninterrupted electricity supply to some of the most remote corners of the state, playing a vital role in accelerating regional development.

Across these districts, TPSODL provides round-the-clock power to critical infrastructure such as schools, hospitals, Anganwadi centres, irrigation facilities, industries and small enterprises. The availability of dependable electricity has strengthened essential public services, boosted agricultural activities and supported livelihood generation, leading to tangible improvements in the quality of life for rural and remote communities.

Technology-driven innovation has been central to TPSODL’s rural transformation journey. The company has leveraged SCADA-based real-time monitoring systems, GIS-enabled network planning and drone surveillance to detect faults in hard-to-reach areas. These initiatives have significantly reduced outage durations, improved response times and enhanced overall service reliability, even during adverse weather conditions.

Operating in one of India’s most cyclone-prone regions, TPSODL has also built robust disaster preparedness and emergency response mechanisms. These systems enable swift restoration of power supply with priority given to critical installations and rural consumers. Continuous infrastructure upgrades, including underground cabling, the establishment of new primary substations, distribution transformer augmentation and voltage improvement works, have further strengthened network resilience and safety.

Commenting on the achievement, CEO Amit Kumar Garg said the award was a reflection of the relentless efforts of teams working on the ground in some of the most demanding geographies. He said that reliable electricity is fundamental to education, healthcare and livelihoods, and added that the recognition reinforces TPSODL’s commitment to delivering safe, resilient and sustainable power to every corner of Southern Odisha.
