MERAMANDALI,
MARCH 14, 2026
Reinforcing its
commitment to community-led development and inclusive growth, the Tata Steel
Foundation organised the third edition of Arunima at Meramandali, creating a
vibrant platform for women entrepreneurs, youth, and adolescents to explore
opportunities for leadership, personal development, and social transformation.
The initiative focused on nurturing entrepreneurship, strengthening collective
institutions, and encouraging holistic community development at the grassroots
level.
The event witnessed
enthusiastic participation from community members, experts, practitioners, and
local leaders who came together to exchange ideas, share experiences, and
inspire collaborative action. Through a series of informative sessions,
interactive discussions, and cultural performances, the programme highlighted
the deep connection between entrepreneurship, empowerment, and sustainable
development in rural communities.
The programme was
graced by several distinguished dignitaries including Bhagat Shamal Kalyanrao;
Uday Kumar Mohapatra, ADM, Angul; Prasanta Kumar Nanda, CHRO, Tata Steel
Meramandali; Kapil Modi, Chief Mills and Downstream, Tata Steel; Prakash
Sanjay, Chief Security, Tata Steel Meramandali; and Uma Sankar Das, Deputy
Registrar of Co-operative Societies (DRCS). Addressing the gathering, the
dignitaries emphasised the importance of cooperative institutions and community
participation in strengthening socio-economic empowerment among women.
One of the major
highlights of the event was the participation of around 250 women shareholders
of the Gruhalaxami Cooperative Society from villages located in the core and
peripheral areas of the Meramandali unit. The Annual General Body meeting of
the cooperative society was also held during the programme, where the President
and Board of Directors shared the vision, goals, and milestones achieved by the
society since its inception, reaffirming its role in supporting women-led
economic initiatives.
Recognising the
remarkable efforts of grassroots leaders, four women — Simarani Prusty, Smita
Biswal, Rashmita Sahu, and Subhadra Nayak — were honoured as “Women
Changemakers” for their inspiring journeys and contributions to community
upliftment and women empowerment. Their stories of perseverance, leadership,
and collective progress served as a source of motivation for many women present
at the gathering.
The programme also
celebrated academic excellence through the Jyoti Fellowship Scholarship, under
which 211 meritorious students from SC and ST communities were awarded
scholarships. The recognition ceremony, held in the presence of dignitaries,
encouraged young students to pursue their educational aspirations with
confidence and determination. In addition, several youth achievers and
sportspersons from the community were also felicitated for their outstanding
accomplishments.
Adding vibrancy to
the event were cultural performances by local youth groups, along with
interactive knowledge-sharing sessions that encouraged dialogue among community
members, government representatives, and development practitioners.
With the successful
organisation of the third edition of Arunima, the Tata Steel Foundation once
again reaffirmed its dedication to creating inclusive platforms that empower
women entrepreneurs, nurture young talent, and strengthen community
institutions. The initiative continues to evolve as a powerful catalyst for
leadership, opportunity, and sustainable empowerment in the region.
