Indian students aspiring to pursue higher education in the
United Kingdom have a golden opportunity as applications for the UK
Government’s prestigious Chevening Scholarships will open on August 4, 2026.
The fully funded scholarship programme, which supports outstanding individuals
to pursue a one-year Master’s degree at any UK university, will accept
applications until October 6, 2026.
Chevening Scholarships, the UK Government’s flagship
international scholarship programme, provide full financial support for
postgraduate study in the UK. The scholarships are open to Indian citizens who
have completed their undergraduate degree and possess a minimum of two years’
work experience gained after graduation.
India hosts the largest Chevening programme in the world,
with nearly 4,000 scholars benefiting from the award since 1983, reflecting the
UK’s long-standing commitment to nurturing future leaders. On returning to
India, Chevening alumni leverage their world-class education, international
exposure and global professional networks to address pressing challenges,
influence policy and create meaningful social and economic impact in their communities.

Chevening in India is supported by several government and
industry partners, including the state governments of Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand,
Nagaland and Karnataka, while additional scholarships are offered with the
support of TVS Motors. These partnerships aim to identify and empower talented
individuals from diverse backgrounds, with a special focus on candidates from
marginalised communities, tier 2 and tier 3 cities, while ensuring balanced
representation of women and men.
The scholarship programme forms an important pillar of the
UK-India education and skills partnership under the shared Vision 2035
framework. By enabling talented Indian professionals to study at leading UK
universities, build lifelong international networks and return with advanced
knowledge and leadership skills, Chevening contributes significantly to
developing the next generation of global leaders.
The impact of the programme continues to grow across the country. More than 75 per cent of scholars in the 2026 Chevening cohort come from tier 2 and tier 3 cities, with many being first-generation learners, while women account for 68 per cent of the cohort. Chevening alumni are making notable contributions across sectors such as public policy, climate resilience, artificial intelligence, journalism, education and gender equality.
